Objectives
To provide a journey of knowledge and skills acquisition aiming to prepare future medical professionals to act correctly and appropriately when confronted in their professional life with medico legal issues, regardless of their field of expertise, in order to contribute to a good application of justice, in the best interest of victims.
Program
Scope, goals and competences of Legal Medicine and other forensic sciences.
Bodily damage assessment in Penal, Civil and Labor Law.
Sudden death and accidental deaths. Suicide and homicide.
Crime scene investigation.
Sexual Crimes. Abuse in familial context.
Forensic psichiatry and psychology.
Forensic genetics and biology. Criminalistics.
Forensic toxicology.
Forensic anthropology and odontology.
Practical sessions: autopsies and clinical exams in Legal Medicine, forensic psychology, criminalistics and forensic toxicology.
Four hours/week of practical sessions, on the above mentioned areas (20 hours of clinical exames, 20 hours of Forensic Pathology, 8 hours of Forensic Psychology and 4 hours of Laboratorial forensic sciences).

Eligibility for exams
Minimum of 75% of classes attendance and according to the rules of the course as well as a minimum of 9.5 classification (0-20) in the final exam.
16 weeks of theoretical classes - 16 hours
12 weeks of practical sessions - 48 hours
Total of 64 hours of attendance.
Calculation formula of final grade
On the continuous assessment, the student shall be assessed only by Forensic Pathology and Forensic Clinics's teachers, according to the parameters that follow:
- knowledge: role and competences of legal medicine and other forensic sciences in articulation with health services; methodology and approach to the victim; general methods of bodily harm assessment; general methodology of medico-legal autopsies; preservation and collection of biological and physical traces.
- professional attitude and behavior: adequate approach to direct and indirect victims; exemption, impartiality and caution in forensic exams; team work.
- clinical and comunication skills: collecting information, performing physical exams and autopsies; selecting, preserving, collecting, packing and issuing biological samples or other traces, ensuring the chain custody; to elaborate reports and orther documents with medico-legal relevance.
These specific 3 areas will be assessed being each worth 6, 7 and 7 points (0-20 scale), respectively.
The final grade will be calculated though the following formula:
