Resumo (PT):
Abstract (EN):
Computational mechanics techniques have gained wide acceptance in the solution of complex
geotechnical problems. The Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, the National Civil
Engineering Laboratory of Lisbon and the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro organised at Porto,
September 2 to 4, 1998, the 3rd International Workshop on Applications of Computational
Mechanics in Geotechnical Engineering.
The two previous editions of this Workshop took place in Rio de Janeiro in 1991 and 1994,
organised by the same institutions. These regular meetings started as a result of a well succeed research project involving the referred organisations.
The Workshop intended to discuss the state-of-the-art in the area of computational mechanics
applied to geotechnical problems. During the event the following topics were addressed.
Computational Models
Underground Structures
Back-Analysis Methodologies
Ground Reinforcement
Earth-Retaining Structures
Brazilians and Portuguese researchers participated actively in those events, together with well
known invited international specialists. Each session had one or two Keynote Lectures and the presentation of invited papers followed by discussion promoted by a Discussion Leader. The content
of this book will be of use to engineers and researchers.
