Asthma is the most prevalent chronic disease in children (0-17 years). In Portugal, prevalence is around 10% and may be increasing. Insufficient data on the cost of asthma in children is available. Data from USA estimated the cost per child per year as $791 reaching ¤5.939 in severe asthma.
There are no Portuguese nationwide data on prevalence or control of asthma in pediatric population, also, no study on the costs of asthma is available. This incomplete knowledge of pediatric asthma burden is a major difficulty to the setup of evidence-based policies for childhood asthma care.
Within the framework of "Portuguese National Asthma Survey" (2010-2012) and "Control and Burden of Asthma and Rhinitis" (PTDC/SAU-SAP/119192/2010; 2012-2014), the main aim of this project is to study cost of asthma in Portuguese children.
Data from those studies, along with data from additional national databases, will be analysed in order to assess direct and indirect costs of asthma in children, using cost-of-illness methodology. Also, the differences of burden in children controlled and uncontrolled asthma will be determined.
This project will produce relevant information about asthma burden in Portuguese pediatric population. It's expectable to be able to estimate costs of childhood asthma in Portugal, as well as, identify opportunities for improvements in childhood asthma care.
