Abstract (EN): Cutting load monitoring is of utmost importance in the machinability assessment in metal cutting operations. It allows for the analysis of important aspects such as the cutting stability or tool geometry, thus enabling a constant improvement of machining operations. In order to facilitate the benchmark of different cutting scenarios orthogonal cutting is often used, given its simplicity when compared with industrial machining operations of more intricate dynamics. In this study, the specific cutting pressure estimates obtained from orthogonal cutting experiments are compared with the ones obtained from turning operations for 3 selected alloys, in order to evaluate the suitability this parameter towards mechanistic modelling. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
