Objectives
The objective of the course is for the student to develop a critical and in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of drug use, dependence on psychoactive substances, whether legal or illegal, and non-substance addictive behaviors. The approach covers the different spheres of psychological intervention, including prevention, dissuasion, and treatment. The student will learn the key concepts of addictology and will have the opportunity to practice intervention strategies, thus developing the essential skills for their future professional role as a psychologist.
Learning outcomes and competences
At the end of this course, students should:
- Know the general landscape of drug use in Portugal, including major trends, prevalence, and the diversity of drug use patterns.
- Understand the fundamental pillars of the Portuguese drug model, recognizing both the successes and challenges faced, as well as the available response mechanisms and resources.
- Conduct a critical analysis of the key concepts and intervention strategies applied to illegal drugs, legal drugs, and behavioral addictions.
- Perform screening and assessment of problems related to the use of psychoactive substances and behavioral addictions.
- Plan and develop strategies for the prevention of drug use.
- Plan and develop motivational interventions appropriate to the individual’s stage of change.
- Plan and develop strategies based on the brief interventions model.
- Develop and implement psychological interventions for addictive behaviors, respecting the individual’s uniqueness and utilizing the various strategies provided by evidence-based intervention models, such as cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, constructivist, and others.

Historical aspects of drug use. General overview of drug use in Portugal and consumption patterns. Origins, classification of psychoactive substances, effects, and associated risks. Fundamental concepts and issues.
Definitions, scope, and general trends in intervention for addictive behaviors. Evaluation. Diagnosis based on the DSM-V. Screening and assessment tests. The relapse process and its prevention.
The Portuguese drug model: successes and challenges. Dissuasion and Prevention in Addictive Behaviors and Dependencies: Brief Interventions and Motivational Interview.
Political, cultural, economic, and social aspects that impact people who use drugs (PWUD): a human rights-centered approach
Addictive behaviors and non-substance dependencies: gambling disorder.
Psychoanalysis and the psychosocial care policy for drug users in Brazil, including Risk Reduction and Harm Minimization.
Cognitive-behavioral models.
A clinical and social perspective on alcohol-related problems.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The classes combine the presentation of contents with the discussion of relevant scientific literature, as well as the presentation and discussion of group projects conducted during the theoretical-practical sessions.

Mandatory presence.
Calculation formula of final grade
Continuous assessment without an exam:
1 group project (presentation and debate): 40%
1 individual paper (5 pages, excluding bibliography): 50%
presencial participation: 10%
40% + 50% + 10%

Students who are exempted by law from attendance at classes will have an individualized opportunity to present their work.
Classification improvement
No opportunity for grade improvement.
Observations
The course will be taught primarily in Portuguese with moments of translation to english. The indication of the working language as “Portuguese - suitable for English-speaking students” is based on the provision of slides and bibliography in English, as well as the fact that some classes or parts of them will be taught in English.
