Objectives

The purpose of this CU is to encourage the development of the capacity for reflection and critical analysis based on the configurations of employment in contemporary societies and their segmentation, according to different socio-demographic characteristics, and not seldom reproducing social asymmetries to which it is important to give visibility and promote debate.

Different conceptual frameworks about the labour market, employment (sub)systems will be addressed, not losing sight of the concrete realities, i.e. specific work situations and their territorial embedding. The aim is to promote the analysis of different activity sectors, understanding both their demographic traits and their territorial expression; as well as the analysis of their traits - in terms of health impacts, and in terms of public action, in the construction of processes that contribute to their recognition and the creation of a response that integrates the point of view of the protagonists of such territories.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this curricular unit the students should be able to:
- Know and understand the dynamic inter-relations between age, gender, employment and health, and the social determinants of their inequalities;
- Understand the importance of knowledge on the evolution of employment systems and subsystems for the work psychologist’s intervention, namely, in relation to ageing at and by work;
- know and understand the main health-disease indicators and analyse their several dimensions: social, economic, demographic and territorial;
- Produce analyses and thoughtful reflections for addressing the issues under consideration;
- Organize with clarity, accuracy and consistency the argumentation and justification of the theoretical and methodological options taken in different situations;
- Foster the ability of self-criticism and the apprehension of the standpoint of different interlocutors implied in these analyses.

Working method

Presencial

Program

1. Dialectic relation between demographic changes of the (un)employed population, and the public policies drawn; the evolutions of employment configurations and the workers’ status, and the conditions under which it can be assumed in different sectors

2. The theoretical analysis frameworks of the labor market in industrialized economies, stressing the contribution of other social sciences, beyond economic science

3. The evolution of the Portuguese employment systems, highlighting the regional and sectoral specificities in view of local development

4. Analysis of different impacts of work on health, in the course of the professional path, constrasting their processes of recognition; and discussing the inequalities produced in different territorial constellations

5. Theoretical and methodological developments in the study of ageing at and by work;

6. Discussion of new forms of territorial management and multi-actor coordination, in view of setting commitments between global and local.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Lectures. Research of statistical data related to the topics of the discipline. Meetings and debates with institutional/key actors from sectors of economic activity. Fieldwork and guidance/mentoring. Online Resources.

The presentation of theoretical frameworks, temporally and geographically situated, fosters, on the one hand, the reflection during the course about the influence of history and context dimensions on employment configurations and, on the other hand, the debate about the inequalities that are (re)produced.

The contact with concrete work situations – embodied in a certain sector and on a particular scale of analysis, with data collection and their evolution over time – and the contact with key actors and collective entities in each context, allows the construction of a research path, whose criteria for the selection and analysis of information emerge from knowledge of the "real work" and are therefore not extrinsic to it.

The appropriation and integration of different perspectives and methodological proposals will be consolidated by the reading of reference texts; practical exercises of individual and collective reflection, in the class context; and by the work done in real context.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Trabalho de campo 40,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Exame 40,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 38,00
Frequência das aulas 54,00
Trabalho de campo 50,00
Trabalho escrito 20,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

Classes are subject to verification of attendance. Students who miss more than 25% of predicted classes will not be subject to assessment.

Calculation formula of final grade

In the evaluation are weighted the following components:
- Practical work undertaken within classes: a critical synthesis of questions to be posed to invited actors, who are active in public institutions that intervene in the regulation of labour (both working and employment conditions), and in the guarantee of social protection - 20%
- Field work (in group) and its presentation in class - 40%
- Final exam (theoretical reflection) (5 pag.) - 40%

Failing to accomplish one of the components implies a zero classification in that particular component. The minimum score required is 8 values in all components.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Classification improvement

The review or improvement of classification are limited to components which by their nature are repeatable and, therefore, allow the revaluation initially assigned.

Observations

Special situations concerning the evaluation will be discussed with the teaching team at the beginning of the UC.
