Objectives

At the end of this course, students should:



  1. Carry out a critical analysis of the general concepts and strategies of intervention in alcohol and drugs and behavioral addictions;




  2. Conduct a comprehensive assessment of problems related to addictive behaviors;




  3. Plan and develop drug prevention strategies;




  4. Plan and develop motivational interventions appropriate to the individual's stage of change;




  5. Plan and develop intervention strategies based on the Brief Interventions model.




  6. Develop intervention strategies for addictive behaviors based on the cognitive-behavioral model.



Learning outcomes and competences

Students will devellop their knowledge on addictive behaviours, specially regarding drug use and misuse, and on different intervention dimensions: prevention, treatment and reintegration. They will also learn the main concepts and theoretical background of addictology and will develop skills in order to work as psychologists of addictive behaviours in the future.

  1. Definitions, scope and trends in intervention on addictive behaviors


Description and critical analysis of concepts in addictive behaviours. Global intervention perspectives in addictive behaviors. The Portuguese drug strategy.



  1. Assessment of addictive behaviors


Objectives of screening and assessment procedures in the field of drug abuse and addiction. Assessments relevant for understanding the relapse process. The DSM-V diagnoses. Screening and assessment tests. 



  1. Drug prevention


Evolution of drug prevention. Universal, selective and indicated programs. Main drug prevention approaches. Quality criteria for drug prevention programs.



  1. Treatment approaches


Motivational interviewing. Cognitive therapy and cognitive-behavioural approaches. Brief interventions. The relapsing process and its prevention.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical-practical classes combine the exposure of contents and the and discussion of didactic videos about intervention strategies related with addictive behaviors. Demonstration and training of specific skills are achieved by performing role-plays and other guided activities.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade is obtained through the weighted average of the marks obtained in  two tests distributed throughout the semester.

 

Examinations or Special Assignments

Do not exist.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students who are exempted by law from attendance at classes must take the final exam (for their evaluation, the criterion of participation in the classes will not be taken into account).

Classification improvement

Students will be able to register for an exam in case of failure or lack of tests at the time of appeal in the year in which the student attended the curricular unit. As for the improvement of classification, this is foreseen only once, until the time of appeal of the school year subsequent to the one in which they obtained approval and in which the curricular unit has foreseen final examination.The final classification in the curricular unit is the highest, between the one that had been obtained initially and that which results from the improvement of classification made.
