Objectives

The UC “Gender and Sexualities” main goal is to allow in-depth training in the research domain of Gender, Feminisms and Sexualities, allowing the students to be able to:

 

  • Situate Gender in an historical analysis of feminisms and plural feminist epistemologies;
  • Understand cultural and ideological dynamics of production of the sexes and sexuallities;
  • Acquire knowledge on the intersection of different social belonging categories, and individual and relational experiences repeatedly associated with sex and sexualities.
  • Understand the relevance of life cycle and, especially, ageing on a (non-)normative sexualities approach;
  • Investigate and work carefully with diverse populations, taking into account social intersections, life trajectories and privilege / oppression dynamics related with such populations.

Learning outcomes and competences



Using mainly expositive methodologies and critical reflection, the UC allows the students to attain global aims essentially on a theoretical and conceptual nature and, more specifically, provide proficiency on critical self-reflection fundamental to the intervention and research with the populations named by the UC. Group discussion allows the consolidation of learnings through the necessary sustained argumentations

  1. Gender social construction and feminisms waves.

  2. Gender, sexual double standard and feminine sexual fluidity

  3. Feminist sexology

  4. Sexual normalization disposals and plural sexual orientations

  5. Oppression/Privilege matrixes - Intersectional theory, methodology and interseccional practices.




The first issue, Gender social construction and feminisms waves, will allow exploring Gender issues as part of an feminist historical perspective and the learning of plural feminists epistemologies;


Issues 2 and 3 of the syllabus will bring access and knowledge to a life cycle perspective, including issues such as feminine sexual fluidity and ageing;


Issues 4 and 5 of the syllabus will facilitate in-depth knowledge of sexualites and intervene/investigate in themes that intersect with sexualites and other sexual belonging categories.

  • Expositive method, aiming the update of core concepts.

  • Critical review promotion, in order to capacitate the student on a reflexivity exercise.

  • Group discussion, seeking the enforcement of perspectives and theories vindication.

Eligibility for exams



To obtain approval, students (groups of 2) should write the outline of a research project , in the last two hours of the module considering the specificities inherent to a intersectional project . The theme can be chosen by the team. 


Grades are presented on a 0 to 20 scale.

Calculation formula of final grade

Sum of the grade regarding the participation in classes (20%) with the writen assignment (80%).
The 20% on participation in classes results from the appreciation of presences  as well as participation in classes.

A new written assignment can be submeted
