Objectives

This curricular unit aims to present and discuss the most influential theories and models of learning and memory. Simultaneously, this curricular unit focus on empirical research methodologies, especially those that most contributed to the development of these areas of basic psychology.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this curricular unit, students should be able to: (1) Identify and characterize different models, based on scientific data, of learning and memory; (2) Describe and understand the various types of memory, capacity, limits, in addition to the main concepts and explanatory theories; (3) Analyse and communicate knowledge in this area of ​​knowledge; (4) Apply some of the knowledge obtained in everyday and school situations; (5) Participate in carrying out small experimental studies in this area of ​​knowledge, integrating knowledge and experience.

(2) Sensorial auditory and visual memory; Short-term memory (STM); Working memory (WM);

(3) Long-term memory (LTM); Consolidation processes in LTM; Retrieval in LTM;

(4) Autobiographical memory; Memory deficits and excesses;

(5) Conclusion: Memory centrality on personality and identity.

Eligibility for exams

To obtain frequency, class attendance of theoretical classes is not compulsory, but it is highly recommended and it is valued in the final exam, whenever students make specific references to discussions from the lectures they attended.
Students must attend 70% of the practical classes in order to be approved in this curricular unit.

The final classification is the result of:
