Objectives

- Develop concepts on culture and gender and domestic violence, in diverse theoretical perspectives;


- Reflect upon the connection between power dinamics, social movements and social change in the socio-historic construction around gender violence, family violence, as well as violence against elderly and against children;

- Identify and critical analysis of models and social policies in intervention for cultural and educational change concerning gender violence;

- Elaboration of small educative intervention projects in the field of social and cultural change of gender violence in a multidisciplinary perspective.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that students will learn:

- to critically analyze theoretical perspetives related to culture and gender violence;

- to develop skills to improve horizontalization of communication, in a dynamic hermeneutic framework;  

- to analyze possibilities of creating social educacational change;

- to analyze conflict and power dinamics both in reproduction and in change concerning culture and gender violence;

- to analyze possible relations between social and educational change in order to prevent gender violence.

 1. Culture – a polissemy concept in the diverse social sciences: antropology, sociology, historiography, education, women’s studies, feminist studies, gender studies and queer studies;

2. Patriarchy(s): diverse perspetives in its conceptualization – problems, dilemas and possibilities;

3. The contribution of postcolonial studies and decolonial studies for the problematizarion of culture and gender violence;

4. Cultural production and social change: an educational perspective on deconstructing patriarchal culture;

5. Intervention projects for deconstructing patriarchal culture and preventing gender violence.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The course will emphasize active, dialogic and committed pedagogies, as well as content pedagogy in a small proportion:

Pedagogic strategies will be:

- Oral reports of students experiences;

- Presentation of articles (or book chapters) by groups of students with focus on the issue of the course;

- Brief comparative analysis of diverse theoretical explanations in culture and gender violence – group work; or, alternatively:

- Analysis or elaboration of small intervention projects for deconstructing patriarchal culture and preventing gender violence;

- Analysis of patriarchal culture in quotidian situations and its characterization for gender violence; individual assignment.
