Objectives

Similarly to Research Seminar I, Research Seminar II also intends to contribute to the design and development of the research project and thesis, through the development of conceptual and methodological skills. Throughout the second semester, students work on the final version of their thesis project.

Learning outcomes and competences

By the end of the semester students should be capable of:

a) presenting a written document with their research project, according to established norms

b) presenting orally their research project and discussing conceptual and methodological decisions.

In addition to the methodological and conceptual aspects required in defining the thesis project, during this semester some doctoral students begin the preparatory work necessary for the implementation of their project. This work includes the selection of participants, preliminary studies of the instruments, pilot studies, and ethical procedures, among other aspects.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The doctoral student is included, whenever possible, in a research group, either within FPCEUP or within research performed in other institutions. In this context, presentation and discussion of theoretical essays or perspectives and research are undertaken. Tutorial guidance, normally on a weekly basis.

Calculation formula of final grade

At the end of the second semester, each doctoral student must submit his/her project to an evaluation that consists of two components: a) written paper with the presentation of the project b) oral presentation and discussion of the project. The following parameters of evaluation should be considered by a jury appointed for each PhD student: . the literature review . clarification of the research objectives . support for the research objectives and discussion of its relevance considering the literature review . discussion of the relevance of the research . method - appropriateness of the methodological options . expected results . plausibility of the project according to the schedule . clarity and overall quality of writing . selective and consistent use of references according to APA standards . presentation and discussion.
