Objectives

Taking the theoretical contributions of sexual and intimate citizenship and gender sociology, this module:

  • explores the contemporary challenges of sexual and gender diversity – the construction of masculinities and femininities - in the citizenship and education fields;
  • aims to broaden the understanding of school-based sex education as a necessary condition to promote more equality, rights and freedom.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that at the end of this module the students are able to:

  • articulate the multiple theoretical, political and scientific debates and approaches around sex education in schools;
  • recognise the contributions of health, gender and sexual studies to the construction of sex education;
  • understand the school as a space of multiple sexual and social identities;
  • mobilize concepts to build a critical thinking on the issues worked at the module.

Eligibility for exams

The assessment in this course will be conducted based on an individual written assignment in which students discuss in a reflexive manner the framework developed during the semester.

The final essay can be delivered by students that assisted at least at 75% of the classes but didn’t obtain a mark equal or superior to 10 in the formative assessment. In this case, the final reflection represents 100% of the final mark and all the marks from the formative evaluation will be ignored.

The lack of realisation/presentation of some activity mentioned above will lead to the failure at this subject.

THE STUDENT WORKERS THAT ARE NOT ABLE TO ATTEND CLASSES ON A REGULAR BASIS NEED TO CONTACT THE TEACHER IN THE BEGGINING OF THE YEAR IN ORDER TO ESTABLISH THE WORK TO BE PRESENTED FOR A SUCCESFUL GRADE.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final mark is established according to the marks obtained in the following activities:

- Individual written assignment on the topics addressed in the module: 70%.

- Student participation in the classroom and a short reflection on films in articulation with compulsory bibliographic references. This activity is marked from 0 to 20 points: 30%.

In summary:

(30%+70% = 100%)
