To know the epistemological traditions, the central characteristics and the different phases of qualitative research
To develop skills for planning qualitative research in social sciences
To know and be able to apply qualitative research methods and techniques at different levels: data collection, data analysis and interpretation of results
To de able to implement the different phases of a qualitative research project: definition of the problem, planning, elaboration of research design, writing research questions, selection of data collection method(s), data collection, analysis and interpretation of results
To acquire competences to write a scientific paper on qualitative research
To acquire basic knowledge on mixed methods research design
To be proficient in procedures to guarantee quality and validity of data and interpretations in qualitative and in mixed methods research designs.
At the end of the course, Master students should be able to create conditions for the construction of scientific knowledge and authonomous work, which may enable them to become competent professionals and to be able of developing qualitative research.
Thus, the skills acquired during this course should, above all, be ragrded as educational resources. Training should thus provide an adequate learning of qualitative approaches and of specific methods of data collection and data analyzis.
The different phases of qualitative research: definition and formulation of the problem; design and sampling in qualitative research; formulation of research questions, data collection, coding and categorizing procedures, data analysis and interpretation Strategies and methods in qualitative research: (a) in data collection: different types of interviews, different kinds of observation, focus groups, Q-sort; (b) in data analysis: content analysis, discourse analysis, analysis of narratives case study, and grounded theory approach Validity and quality control of data and interpretations – triangulation in qualitative and quantitative research Reporting and presenting qualitative data.

Formative evaluation without final exam.
1.Oral assessment: Final oral presentation in practical classes - group work (3 students): description of the qualitative research study implemented by the students in the scope of the classes.
2. Written Assignement: Final written group work (3 students) - This written work (acoording to APA citation norms), must include a theoretical introduction and a study design based on a qualitative methodology.
4. Lab Work:SISDAT (5) - Individual written reflections about the field work, in 5 moments of the learning process.
The minimum classification in each component to obtain the final eighted mean is 10.
Final grade:
1. Oral Final oral presentation in practical classes - group work (3 students): description of the qualitative research study implemented by the students in the scope of the classes (50%).
2. Final written group work (3 students) - This written work (acoording to APA citation norms), must include a theoretical introduction and a study design based on a qualitative methodology (40%).
4. SISDAT (5) - Individual written reflections about the field work, in 5 moments of the learning process (10%).

Students with the worker student statute (WS, AAC ...), have the right not to participate in the classes. However, all students will have to complete the assignements for evaluation.
Regardig the evaluation component SISDAT (Individual written reflections about the field work, in 5 moments of the learning process (10%), in case the students may not attend the practical classes, they will hav to send an identical reflexion to be assigned by the teacher.
It is possible to improve the final grade by reformulating the written work, equivalent to 40% of the total evaluation..
