The objectives of this course are: - To value reading and writing as critical communication practices in science. To foster critical thinking about topics in human and social sciences. - To understand writing as a thinking tool. - To use writing as effective communication and thinking means. - To know the main forms of scientific communication. - To use effectively some writing support tools. To know and develop effective personal writing strategies. - To monitor and self-regulate writing accordingly to scientific writing principles.
By the end of this course students shall be able to: - value reading and writing as critical communication practices in science. Think critically about topics in the human and social sciences. - understand writing as a thinking tool. - use writing as effective communication and thinking means. - know the main forms of scientific communication. - use effectively some writing support tools. - develop effective personal writing strategies. - self-regulate writing accordingly to scientific writing principles.
- Valuing reading and writing practices in science. - Creativity and expression of ideas. - Information and critical thinking. - Writing mechanics: sentence, punctuation, cohesion and text genres. - Writing support tools: grammars and digital tools for bibliographical management. - Scientific writing principles. Forms and functons of scientific communication. - Writing metaknowledge: planning, translation, revision and coherence.
Sessions occur weekly and typically function as workshop sessions. Sessions are funded in a set of recommended readings, its discussion, and performance of several writing exercises aided by tutoring and digital aids. The course has a counterpart online component (http//moodle.up.pt), where several supporting materials are available.

Attendance to the pratical lessons is verified. Students that miss more than 25% of the lessons cannot present themselves to the final examination.
Evaluation is distributed with final examination. For course evaluation the following elements are pondered: a) written work, b) participation and engagement; c) exam. The weight of these ciomponents in final evaluation is, repectively, a) 40%, b) 10%, c) 50%. Writing assignments in the course are submitted through the online tool Turnitin. All evaluations will be expressed in 0-20 scale.
Student-workers are not obliged to frequency checking. Thus, participation and engagement can be replaced by an additional written assignment, which will be weighted in 10%.
Special evaluations need to be discussed with the professors at the begining of the course.
Grade improvement is possible in the exam component, necessarily taking the procedures required in the evaluation rulebook.
