Objectives

• Acquaintance with the biological aspects of human social behavior. Acquisition of skills to analyze human cultures when compared with other non-human primate cultures. • Acquaintance with the evolution of thought on society and on social relations accounting for social, economic, political and religious conditions. 

Learning outcomes and competences

• Acquaintance with some of the most prominent theoretical and methodological approaches in Social Sciences. • Acquaintance with the problems arising in research and production of knowledge in Social Sciences.

1. Biology and Society: the ethological bases of human beings as social beings. - Evolutionary perspectives on social behavior - Social cohesion and language - Altruism and cooperation 2. The emergence of thought on society - Philosophical, socio-political and ideological bases - The illuminist philosophy and the idea of Social Contract - Forerunners of social sciences - Montesquieu, Tocqueville e Comte. 3. Introduction to three classic sociologists: K. Marx; E. Durkheim; M. Weber. - Philosophical influences, key concepts, research methods, vision on Society and on the Individual.
