It is expected that the student is able to:
- Integrate several different theoretical models and concepts that contribute to the analysis of marital relationships;
- Understand the relationship of the subsystem with other family subsystems;
- Integrate the various factors (individual, relational and contextual) in the analysis of specific situations, on a developmental, ecological and systemic perspective;
- Know and discuss different assessment techniques and intervention strategies, including them in processes of psychotherapeutic intervention, considerating the diversity of problems that emerge in this field;
- Reflect criticaly on differing proposals for action;
- Recognize the importance of the multidisciplinary and team work paying attention to the ethical, legal and social action across the psychotherapeutic work.
- Recognize, in the exercise of clinical practice, the remaining need for questioning, searching and sharing knowledge.
This CU aims to consolidate knowledge already acquired in previous courses and specifically enable students to understand the idiosyncrasies of the marital system today. Emphasis is placed on a systemic and developmental approach (though constructivist models and attachment theory) that highlight the uniqueness of individual and marital trajectories that cross the marital subsystem. The possibility to observe, reflect and discuss clinical situations allows students to build capacity for clinical intervention in this specific field deepening central themes in the lives of individuals throughout their life cycle (for example, the emergence of conflicts or issues in couples’ sexuality), and essentially be able to make hypotheses, plan and implement appropriate intervention strategies.
1. The marital relations on a socio-historical perspective: considering the marital as intimate relationships (whether cohabitating couples or couples actually married) and, despite of most of the research being done with heterosexual relationships, whenever possible we address homosexual relationships.
2. Theoretical perspectives and intervention along the life cycle of the couple: the psychodynamic models, systemic and developmental and others. The current marital paradigm: from an integrative proposal of intimacy to the concepts of love, marital satisfaction, functionality, investment, expectations, cognitions,…
3. Specific situations of marital experience: the emergence of relational conflict and violence: explanatory models and intervention.
4. Sexuality: the psychosexual development, issues of gender identity, homosexuality, sex education, sexual dysfunction, intervention and research in clinical sexology.
5. Methodologies assessment and psychological education programs for the development of marriage. Couple therapy.
- Presentation and discussion of the thematic subjects encouraging the active participation of students;
- Discussion and deepening of clinical cases from the experience of the teacher, other teachers/psychologists invited or screened situations;
- View and discuss videos about psychotherapeutic processes on different problems and with different models of intervention;
- Contact with marital intervention programs: design, implementation, evaluation and critical discussion of them;
- Use of rôle-playing situations for reflection on the practice of psychotherapeutic intervention, given the specificity of issues of co-therapy;
- Discussion of ethical dilemmas associated with clinical intervention;
- Contact with psychologists who have issues related to the intervention in this area;
- Presentation by students of a clinical work to be discussed within the group;
The evaluation is distributed (work on clinical case, 40%) with final exam (60%).
