Objectives

The major aim of this course is to introduce three issues in psychology of aging: (1) Aging according to a developmental model; (2) Psychosocial aspects of aging; (3) Cognition, memory and aging. Each of these issues will be organized within a module and lectured by a different teacher.

Program

1. Aging according to a developmental model:
Aging as a continuum development process
Cognitive development from formal to pos-formal stage
Ego and personality development
Moral and religious development

2 Psychosocial aspects of aging:
Introduction to the psychosocial view of aging
Social psychology of aging
Aging population
Ageism, stereotypes, discrimination, attitudes and assessment
Solitude, issues, explanations and assessment
Solitude and universities for elderly people

3. Cognition, memory and aging:
Aging and cognition: Definition, models and perspectives
General cognitive theories of aging
Cognitive impairment related to memory types
Memory assessment in elderly: some tasks and tests
Memory complains and memory assessment
Normal, mild cognitive impairment and dementia
Aging: gains and losses
Aging: activity, plasticity, wisdom and cognitive reserve
Conclusion: Issues for a research
