Objectives
Students should be able to:
- analyse and discuss migration phenomena in Portugal and the world;
- articulate issues of identity and difference;
- reflect over research on prejudice and support of immigrants ' rights;
- identify constrains and tendencies of immigrants' civic and political participation;
- analyse the role of media in promoting (in)tolerance;
- characterizing good practices in the inclusion of immigrants.
Program
1. Migrant phenomena in Portugal and the world.
2. Identity and cultural difference. The challenges of the pluralism of identities to democracy (Kymlicka, Habermas, Young, Taylor, Barry, Boaventura, Stoer & Magalhães).
3. Imigration, new and old prejudices and support of immigrant rights: the data of the European Social Survey.
4. Citizenship and imigrant participation.
5. Media e a (in)tolerance.
6. Good practices in imigrants' inclusion. The role of NGO's in fighting discrimination.
