Objectives
- To promote the acquisition of updated knowledge on intellectual and motivational differences, and on the influence of physical and social contexts in the production of differences, using several sources of information;
- To promote the use of knowledge to discuss several problems and to base the support or the refusal of intervention proposals in the intelligence and motivational domains, in several contexts, especially the academic one;
- To develop the capacity to analyse and evaluate critically the produced knowledge, using the experience of a research, developed in natural setting;
- To develop the capacity to work autonomously and in group.
Program
- General introduction: origins, methods and evolution of the study of differences in Psychology.
- Intelligence. Introduction - definition and evolution of the concept. General aspects of intra and inter-individual and inter-group differentiation by socio-economic status and gender; physical contexts of development - hereditary role; social contexts of development - family and school roles.
- Motivation - Introduction - definition and evolution of the concept. General aspects of intra and inter-individual and inter-group differentiation by socio-economic status and gender; physical contexts of development - hereditary role; social contexts of development - family and school roles.
- Conduction of a small research project - a study in the intellectual or motivational domains -, reflecting about the role of this form of knowledge construction, developing basic capacities, analytical and critical, about the produced research in the domain.

Eligibility for exams
- 3/4 of compulsory presence in classes;
- Active participation in the development and conduction of a small research in natural setting, in smalll group, with the presentation of this work to the entire class (large group), and the production of a final report with an overview of the several phases and results (using APA norms);
- Final examination, written and individual.
Calculation formula of final grade
- Participation and presentation of the phases and results of a research in natural setting (in small group of 5/6 persons) - 20%;
- Written report of the several phases and results of research (small group of 5/6 persons), with a maximum of 10 pages A4, double-spaced, Times 12, following APA norms - 30%;
- Written examination, individual, with a question to develop and several small questions - 50%;
All these components of evaluation are expressed in a 0-20 scale and the students need a minimum of 8 in each of them to make the final sum.
All the students have success if they obtain a minimum of 10.
Examinations or Special Assignments
- Presentation of the phases and development of a research in natural setting during 20 minutes in small group;
- Written report, delivered in the last day of the semester with a maximum of 10 pages A4, double-spaced, Times 12, presenting all the phases of the research.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
According to FPCEUP norms.
Classification improvement
Only possible in the second period of evaluation, after obtaining a minimum of 10 in the written examination.
Not allowed for the other components of evaluation.
Observations
If the students miss the written examination or the presentation (in small group) of the final results of the research, or if they do not participate in the construction of the report (in small group) they fail.
However, if the students fail or quit the written examination, they are allowed to make the examination in the second period of evaluation.
