Objectives

INTRODUCTORY NOTE:
- In the present curricular plan the discipline “Estatística III” (Statistics I) is preceded by the semestrial disciplines of “Estatística I” and “Estatística II” (Statistics I and II). Given the fact that the current academic year makes the transition between two curricular plans, these two later disciplines were not part of the previous academic curriculum of the students attending “Estatística III”. The discipline that was equivalent to those two, was the annual discipline of “Estatística Aplicada à Psicologia I” (Statistics Applied to Psychology I). With the purpose of adjusting the discipline to the preceding academic training of the students that attend it, in the current academic year (2007/2008) the program of “Estatística III” will be subject to some adjustments. As a consequence, the program presented bellow differs substantially from the one that will be presented for this same discipline in following year of 2008/2009.

GENERAL GOALS:
- Review of further exploration of basic statistics concepts and data analyses competences acquired in the preceding academic training;
- Demonstration of the strict relation between research methods and data analyses procedures;
- Training on the technical ability to develop a data analysis plan as a basic part of every research process;
- Practical training on data analysis using computer software and on the written presentation of research results.

REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Operational definition and identification of hypotheses or “research questions” considering the data analyses required to test them;
- Identification of variables within a data analysis plan (level of measure, relation between variables …)
- Decision on the adequate statistics procedures or procedures on a given research program: ability to identify the range of different data analysis possibilities and their respective requisites and limitations
- Performing every statistics procedures in the discipline’s program using SPSS for Windows software
- Analysis, description and interpretation of research results: presentation of statistical results observing the guidelines most commonly used in psychological research (the guidelines of the Manual of the American Psychological Association, 2001 will be used)

Program

STATISTICAL PROCEDURES:
- Testing hypotheses applied to means: the Student’s t test; comparing the means of two paired samples; comparison of the means of two independent samples and the tests of homogeneity of variances (Snedecor’s and Levene’s F tests); testing a sampled mean without the knowledge of the population standard-deviation (the one sample t test)
- Evaluation of the relation between variables: correlation and regression
- Comparing the means of more than two independent samples: analysis of variance and its additional procedures; the underlying logic of the ANOVA model and its framing within the research process
- Comparing the means of more than two paired samples: repeated-measures analysis of variance and its additional procedures; statistical and methodological issues regarding within-subjects designs
- Testing hypotheses in factorial designs: the ANOVA model with two independent variables; the concepts of main effect and interaction
- Testing hypotheses in “mixed” designs: the ANOVA model with between subjects and within subjects variables
- Testing the effects sizes in an ANOVA model: the eta-squared ratio
- Introduction to the methods of multiple regression: the relation between MR and the reasoning underlying the correlational and the ANOVA reasoning

DATA ANALYSIS WITH SPSS:
- Creation of a data base: defining variables and their coding system, entering data, basis rules of data “cleaning”
- Transformation of variables: recoding variables and creating composite variables
- Selection

ANÁLISE DE DADOS COM O SPSS:
- Definição de bases de dados: codificação e definição das variáveis, introdução dos dados, regras básicas de limpeza dos dados
- Transformação de variáveis: recodificação de variáveis e criação de variáveis compostas
- Manipulation of data files: the select cases and split file commands
- Using SPSS’s dropdown menus to select the statistical procedures and define their respective parameters

Theoretical/Practical Classes

Evaluation Type

Evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Subject Classes Participação presencial 26,00
Total: - 0,00

Eligibility for exams

The student must attend a minimal of ¾ of the classes.

Classification improvement

Students are allowed to improve their grade on the first exam by means of a new exam in the evaluation period established by the FPCE-UP in accordance with its regulations

Observations

The discipline’s evaluation is made by means of written exam. This exam evaluates:
- the knowledge of the adequate statistical procedures to different research scenarios
- the ability to use SPSS to perform data analyses, including the need to manipulate data and files (defining and coding variables, entering data, recoding variables, create composite variables, manipulating files, …)
- ability to describe, analyse and interpret results provided be the SPSS, regarding the statistical procedures presented in the discipline’s program
