Objectives

The learning outcomes are:

To know, at an introductory level, the main concepts, problems and methods of Psychology of Language.
Be able to interpret, analyze, and synthesize texts field-specific, and to link acquired knowledge to the relevant everyday experiences.

Program

1. Introduction to language
Perspectives in the study of language. The trilogy language, communication, and cognition.
Language design features. Language as a multicomponential system.

2. Fundamentals of voice and speech production
Glotic, subglotic and supraglotic components. The diversity of phones.
Voicing, manner and place of articulation. Coarticulation and articulatory variability.

3. Introduction to speech perception
The science of speech and the problems of segmentation and invariance. Categorical perception.
Audio-visual integration. Motor theory and audithory theories.

4. Mental lexicon and comprehension
Word identification. Phonemic restauration effect.
Parsing and sentence comprehension. Discourse and sentence comprehension.

5. Language acquisition
Theories of language acquisition. General or domain-specific.

6. Reading and writing
Morpho-syllabic, syllabic and alphabetic writing systems.
Models of expert readers. Learning to read.

7. Dyslexias and aphasias
Acquired disorders of language and their biological basis.
Acquired disorders of reading and speech. Neurocognitive models of language.
