Resumo (PT):
A ditadura portuguesa (1926-1974) estabeleceu um sistema repressivo que incidiu sobre as várias áreas da sociedade. A implementação de um aparelho censório aliado à propaganda formatou as atividades intelectuais e criativas, e os meios de comunicação social em particular. Nas democracias, idealmente, a imprensa exerce uma função de vigilância que se articula com o exercício da cidadania. O regime ditatorial português impediu o processo de amadurecimento que é fundamental na consolidação da cidadania, uma vez que a imprensa não cumpriu essa função mediadora essencial. Este estudo aborda a relação entre censura e jornalismo, o enquadramento legislativo da ditadura e a sua evolução diacrónica, e reflexos da ação dos censores nos jornais do Porto. A metodologia utilizada consiste na problematização teórica, na análise da evolução legislativa, no estudo dos jornais e entrevistas realizadas.

Abstract (EN):
The Portuguese dictatorship (1926-1974) established a repressive system that focused on various areas of society. The implementation of a censorship apparatus combined with a strategic propaganda draw the layout for intellectual and creative activities and news media in particular. In democracies, ideally, the press performs a scrutinizing function upon politics and institutions, the watchdogging, which contributes to the enlightenment of the public opinion and relates to the exercise of citizenship. The Portuguese dictatorial regime prevented this process considered as crucial in the consolidation of the citizenship, since the press did not fulfill this essential mediating function. This study addresses the relationship between censorship and journalism, the legislative framework of the Portuguese dictatorship and its diachronic evolution, and consequences of the action of the censors in Oporto newspapers. The methodology consists in addressing journalism and censorship from a theoretical analysis, the study of the legislative framework and its developments, and the study of Oporto newspapers and statements from senior journalists.
