Resumo (PT): A identificação e classificação dos estados emocionais em humanos fazem parte de um dos objectivos primordiais da investigação científica em áreas tão diversas como a inteligência artificial, a medicina ou a psicologia. A motivação deste trabalho insere-se no desafio de interpretar alguns dos estados emocionais humanos com base na recolha e tratamento de dados biométricos. A captura deste tipo de dados é realizada com recurso a dispositivos diversos, dos quais se destacam o electroencefalograma, o oxímetro e o medidor da condutividade da pele. Partindo da aquisição dos sinais biométricos através dos três dispositivos referidos, um dos principais objectivos deste estudo assenta na classificação do estado emocional do sujeito de teste. Essa classificação é elaborada com base em mecanismos de indução emocional pré-estabelecidos e em métodos e ferramentas de análise e processamento de dados especificamente desenvolvidas no âmbito deste estudo. Na sequência das sessões experimentais constituídas por uma amostra previamente seleccionada tendo como base critérios de inclusão e exclusão, e da aplicação de métodos de análise e processamento de dados, foram exploradas hipóteses relativas a comportamentos padrão dos dados biométricos recolhidos face a um dado estado emocional. A definição e desenvolvimento de uma plataforma capaz da gestão dos dados capturados pelos dispositivos biométricos serviram como base à criação de uma ferramenta de classificação automática do estado emocional do sujeito, cuja taxa de sucesso resultante face às informações fornecidos pelos sujeitos-teste cifrou-se na ordem de 80%. A partir da análise dos resultados das sessões experimentais realizadas e das ferramentas de apoio desenvolvidas, as conclusões mais pertinentes obtidas referem-se à correlação das actividades cerebrais de alta frequência com os estados emocionais, a constatação de que os sujeitos do sexo feminino são emocionalmente mais emotivos face aos do sexo masculino e ainda que os métodos de indução emocional usados não foram suficientemente abrangentes para gerar variações significativas do batimento cardíaco.

Abstract (EN): The identification and assessment of human being emotional states belongs to one of the primordial objectives of the scientific research in such disparate areas as the artificial intelligence, the medicine or the psychology. The motivation for this project is concerned with the challenge of the interpretation of some of the emotional states of humans based on the gathering and analysis of the biometric data. The capture of these data types is developed by the use of a variety of devices, namely the electroencephalograph, the oximeter and the galvanic skin response. Starting from the biometric data acquisition through the three devices previously referred, one of the main objectives of this project is related to the emotional states assessment of a subject. This assessment is based on predefined mechanisms of emotional induction, as well as specific methods and tools developed for this project that are able to analyze and process the data. From the experimental sessions constituted by a pre-selected sample, based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and through the application of methods for the biometric data analysis and processing, there were explored hypothesis related to patron behaviors in concern to a specific emotional state. The definition and development of a framework capable of managing the data gathered through the biometric devices was the base to the creation of an automatic assessment tool of the emotional state of the subject, which the success rate compared to the information given by the subjects was approximately 80%. From the experimental results attained by the experimental sessions and through the support tools developed, the most pertinent conclusions obtained referrers to the correlation of the high frequency brain waves with the emotional states, the fact that female subjects are emotionally more active than the male ones and finally that the emotional induction methods were not broad enough to create any significant changes on the heart rate.
