Summary: |
The project arises from the need of more alternatives to treat and valorise plastic solid wastes (PSWs) which are typically sent and accumulated on landfills. Specifically, in Portugal, 39% of the PSWs, which ended up in the official waste streams, were disposed on landfills in 2014 (more updated data). The disposed PSWs are accumulated as consequence of its low biodegradability, demanding increasingly more surface in the landfills. With this project, it is proposed a solution for the simultaneous fuel and
carbon nanomaterials production, using the plastic wastes as carbon sources. For this purpose, new acidic solid catalysts consisting on carbon-based materials will also be developed in order to transform
the plastic waste into energy and materials. The project involves the participation of the "Empresa Intermunicipal Resíduos do Nordeste" which is searching a solution for the massive plastic accumulation on landfills, currently with a negative market evaluation. |
