Frequently asked questions of students who intend to attend the Degree in Educational Sciences (LCED)



One of the following tests is required:
or 02 Biology and Geology (B)
or 02 Biology and Geology (G)
or 17 Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences
or 18 Portuguese



When you question the average required to enter a course, what you want to know is the score of the last placed in the National Competition for Access to Higher Education of the previous year, which varies from year to year:
2016/2017: 138.0 2015/2016: 133.5
2014/2015: 139.0

54 vacancies are proposed for the National LCED Access Contest.


If you already have a bachelor's or a bachelor's degree and want to attend LCED, you can do it in two ways:
- submit application to the special competition in the form of holders of higher education courses
- or apply for the National Access Contest.
The application for the first contest is made at FPCEUP and the selection is made by applying previously approved ranking criteria.

If you were 23 years old by December 31 of the year before you intend to apply, you do not have access to the Degree in Educational Sciences and you want to apply, you must do the enrollment in the Academic Service of FPCEUP to carry out the tests of access and entry into higher education for over 23 years old to this cycle of studies.

It is admitted the enrollment of candidates who hold secondary education or legally equivalent qualification, as long as they have not taken proof of ability, that is, they do not have access qualification for the same course in the same academic year. It is also allowed to enroll candidates who, having a higher education degree, do not have access to the cycle of studies to which they are applying in the same academic year.

The application for these tests takes place in the month of May and includes the following components of the evaluation, carried out in this order:
- Knowledge assessment test;
- Appraisal of the candidate's school and professional curriculum;
- Evaluation of the candidate's motivations by conducting an interview.

This contest is regulated by the Decree-Law nº 64/2006 of 21 March, and by the Regulation of the University of Porto.

The tests carried out are valid for the application for enrollment and enrollment in the year of approval and in the subsequent three academic years.

No. Candidates approved in the entrance exams will have to submit their application for the vacancies in the Special Competitions, to be held in the first half of the month of August. Vacancies, application deadline and ranking criteria are approved annually. This information can be found on the FPCEUP website.

Change of institution / course pair is the act by which a student enrolls and or enrolls in a different institution / course pair from the one (s) in which, in previous academic years, he / she enrolled. The change of institution / course pair can take place with or without interruption of enrollment and enrollment in a higher education institution.

You must apply for the Higher Education Institution / Course Pair Change scheme competition. This regime is regulated by the ordinance no. 181-D2015 of 19 June 2015 and by the Regulation of the University of Porto.
Annually, vacancies are approved, as well as the ranking criteria, whose disclosure is made on the FPCEUP page.

Often candidates who want to apply for one of these schemes, want to know, in advance, the equivalences or credits that may be granted. FPCEUP does not provide this information. The accreditation of previous training is only verified after the candidate's admission.

International students wishing to attend LCED may do so:
- under mobility programs for those who want to study at FPCEUP only for a semester or an academic year;
- by applying through the National Competition for Access and Admission to Higher Education, subject to the same conditions as the Portuguese candidates. To this end, applicants who hold a secondary course abroad, must go to the Directorate-General for Higher Education in order to obtain information about the equivalence to Portuguese secondary education;
- by means of a special competition for access and admission for international students.

Foreign students may also benefit from special access conditions, by applying to the Directorate-General for Higher Education, if they find themselves in one of the following situations:
- National scholarship students from Portuguese-speaking African countries, within the framework of cooperation agreements signed by the Portuguese State;
- Foreign employees of diplomatic mission accredited in Portugal and their relatives living here, on a reciprocal basis;
- Natives and children of natives from the territory of Timor-Leste.

Re-entry is the act by which a student, after interrupting his studies in a given course and higher education institution, enrolls in the same establishment and enrolls in the same course or in the course that he has successful.
It is not subject to vacancies.

Students who have been enrolled and enrolled in the LCED of FPCEUP can request re-entry through an application with the Academic Service.



The cycle of studies leading to a degree in Education Sciences has a duration of 3 years (6 semesters).
The study cycle is organized by the European credit transfer system ECTS (European Credit Transfer and accumulation System), which corresponds to a total of 180 ECTS, consisting of basic training and an initiation into professionalism. The approval in the referred elements confers the degree of Bachelor of Science in Education.

This course enables graduates in Education Sciences to be specialists in education / training, that is, professionals who will perform their activity in different education and training contexts, inserted in the educational system and outside of it, such as:
- Local Development Agencies
- Cultural, recreational, sports associations
- City Councils
- Youth Houses
- Adult Education and Training Centers
- Day Centers
- Social Centers
- Child and Youth Protection Commissions (CPCJ)
- Department of Health Education
- Basic and Secondary Schools and Groups and TEIP
- Social Protection Institutions
- Parish Councils
- Homes for Children and Youth
- Educational Services for Children, Youth and Seniors

The amount of the annual fee to be paid for LCED attendance is ¤ 999.00 plus the value of School Insurance (¤ 2.00).

Payment methods:
- all at once, upon registration
- or in ten monthly installments, the first one being due at the time of registration / enrollment and the rest, in the months following the beginning of the school year, until the last day of each month.

Students who enroll for the first time and who have applied for a scholarship at the time of application, at the time of enrollment at FPCEUP must submit a declaration of honor on how they have applied to obtain that benefit. Scholarship students will pay the missing installments within thirty working days following the regularization of the scholarship payment.

The recognition of worker-student status depends on the submission, in the Academic Service of FPCEUP, of an application in its own model, accompanied by the following documents:

If the applicant is a worker of the state or of an entity belonging to the public administration:
- declaration of the respective service, signed by the person in charge and marked with a white seal, mandatorily containing the Social Security identification number or subscriber number of the applicant's Caixa Geral de Aposentações.

If the applicant is a worker in the service of a private entity:
- employer statement, updated, signed and authenticated with a recognized stamp or signature, with indication of the number of Social Security beneficiaries or, alternatively, proof of enrollment in the Social Security Fund or even an updated discount map for Social Security.

If the applicant is a self-employed person:
- declaration of commencement / restart of activity issued by the tax office, in the year of that commencement or, in the following years, declaration of income of which no null income can appear
- e, proof of enrollment or exemption from enrollment in Social Security.

If the applicant is attending a vocational training course or temporary occupation program for young people (lasting six months or more):
- declaration of the responsible entity, authenticated with a recognized stamp or signature, containing indication of the respective duration.

The student worker to whom the status is recognized is not subject to:
- Attendance of a minimum number of curricular units of a determined cycle of studies, neither the prescription regime or that implies a change of educational establishment
- Any legal provision that makes school attendance dependent on a minimum number of classes per course unit

The student worker has priority in choosing school hours from among the existing possibilities, even if limited to the period that is annually disclosed for the exercise of such preference
The student worker is also entitled to request, in each academic year, an additional exam outside the normal and recourse periods, in curricular units with evaluation only by final exam or with distributed evaluation with final exam, in this case only at component of the final exam, up to a limit of nine ECTS.

A "part-time student" frequency regime is considered to be one in which the student enrolls annually up to a maximum of 37.5 ECTS. The application is submitted at the time of registration and they pay the minimum fee.

FPCEUP has a Unit for the Coordination of Student Support Services that develops part of its activity in the context of supporting personal integration and the realization of the educational path, as well as the creation of conditions for equal learning opportunities. It does this through two areas: support for students with special educational needs and psychological support for students who require it.
