The Master degree in Teaching Visual Arts in the 3rd Cycle of Basic Education and Secondary Education (MEAV), is a joint program of the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (FPCEUP) and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (FBAUP), is a professional master's degree that qualifies to teach in the subject group of visual arts in the 3rd Cycle of Basic and Secondary Education.
The MEAV is an academic and professional training project for teachers in Visual Arts, covering the scientific areas of Visual Arts and Education Sciences, in a total of 120 ECTS, focusing specifically on General Educational Training, Specific Didactics in the area of Visual Arts, Initiation to Professional Practice, including Supervised Teaching Practice, and Training in the Teaching Area: Visual Arts.
The programme is divided into 2 curricular years. In the 1st year, the programme provides the opportunity to discuss complex questions about teaching and learning in the visual arts, using critical conceptual frameworks and innovative research methodologies in the field of art education. The aim is to ensure both training for the research work of a reflective teacher and the acquisition of the skills required for a (Master's) internship.
The 2nd year is divided between the Internship (“Teacher Training”) and the Report. The internship allows the exercise of pedagogical practice in schools of the 3rd Cycle of Basic and Secondary Education (with which cooperation protocols have been previously established), with the monitoring and supervision of cooperating teachers at the (internship) school and the supervision of FPCEUP and FBAUP faculty. The program of the Report course is part of the specific didactics area and varies according to themes, issues and problems selected by the students, taking into account the experience in the internship context and the problematization of teaching practice in visual arts and with research in the field of art education. The Report (and the MEAV) culminates with the presentation and public defense of the final report to a jury, specially composed for this purpose.
