The Master Degree in Psychology Themes (MTP) aims to qualify professionals with degrees in multiple areas, providing them with in-depth knowledge of psychology themes that will enrich their daily practices and professional performance.

The program comprises four semesters, combining a structured curricular component with the development of a Dissertation. The curricular component combines a set of (mandatory) Courses aimed at developing different transversal skills, namely research, with in-depth contact with knowledge and skills associated with specific themes in Psychology.

This Master does NOT allow the exercise of the profession as Psychologist and does not give access to the Ordem dos Psicólogos Portugueses (OPP).




Learning outcomes:

The MTP targets those interested in in understanding psychological principles and research methodologies in specific fields, and is particularly directed to:
  • Holders of a national or foreign higher academic degree awarded following a first cycle of studies (180 ECTS) in Psychology or related areas;
  • Holders of a national or foreign higher academic degree in other areas, as long as their curriculum demonstrates adequate basic scientific preparation for the cycle of studies in Psychology Themes;
  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum, which is recognized as attesting to the ability to carry out this cycle of studies, by the statutorily competent scientific body of FPCEUP.



Thematic areas

For the 2024-2026 edition, which began in September 2024, the MTP has been organized into four Thematic Areas:

Neurocognition and Language: aimed at graduates in the fields of Psychology, Life and Health Sciences (Biology, Pharmacy and the like) and Linguistics who wish to carry out research on a topic among those currently being studied in the Neurocognition and Language group at the University of Porto's Psychology Center. The research is aimed at complex cognitive processes, especially language (including dyslexia and written composition), communication, emotion and executive function, approached from a neurocognitive and translational perspective.

Child Development Psychology and Education – Inclusive Education and Early Intervention: aimed at professionals with a first degree in Psychology, Education, Social Work or Intervention in Child and Adolescent Development. The syllabus focuses on understanding and research in the field of Inclusive Education and Early Intervention, Learning Difficulties, contemplating the approach in educational contexts (family and school) and community contexts throughout the life cycle.

Disaster and Trauma Psychology: aimed at professionals whose work involves acting in contexts of collective interaction (e.g. psychologists, civil protection technicians, local authority technicians, teachers, police officers, doctors, nurses, social workers, social and community intervention technicians, educators, managers, etc. ), where the existence of disturbed behaviour or a multi-victim catastrophe/crisis/disaster requires theoretical and practical knowledge of emotional stabilization, group behaviour management, identifying symptoms of psychological trauma in survivors and rescue/health professionals, stress management techniques for professionals, etc. In addition to content aimed at disaster and trauma work, specific areas such as working with children, suicide or social conflicts/extremism may also be covered.

Social Psychology: aimed at graduates in the fields of Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, Social Education (and the like) who wish to carry out research on a topic among those currently being studied by the Social Psychology group at the Psychology Center of the University of Porto. The research is aimed at two perspectives of social psychology: 1) the psychosocial processes associated with the emergence of deviant behavior in social groups/society, social control mechanisms and their impact on social cohesion; 2) the psychosocial processes and processes of social influence associated with consumer behavior, particularly impulse consumption.

For the 2025-2027 edition, starting in September 2025, the MTP will be organised into three Thematic Areas:

Child Development Psychology and Education - Child Protection and Rights: aimed at graduates and professionals in the social sciences and humanities (psychology, social work, sociology, law, education, health, among others) with an interest in the area of Child Protection and Rights. This thematic area focuses on research and intervention issues in the area of protecting children at risk and in danger, and promoting their rights. It analyses the experience, needs and developmental trajectories of children from an interdisciplinary perspective, focusing on issues relating to parents and professionals in the field of protection, studying the family system and family and institutional foster care contexts. Master's students will be involved in ongoing research projects at the Development and Education Group of the Psychology Centre of the University of Porto, for the development of their thesis project. This area is part of the European Network of Masters in Children's Rights (ENMCR) and, as holders of intervention and research methodologies in the promotion of children's rights in different disciplinary areas, graduates from this MTP will be able to take up leadership positions in the defence of children's rights in private, public, administrative and non-governmental organisations.
