Doctoral Program in Educational Sciences

InformationCourse/CS accredited by the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES).
PDCE

The Doctoral Programme in Education Sciences (PDCE) is a great opportunity for producing knowledge focused on education and training. The programme offers a broad vision on education (formal, informal and non-formal), and its international atmosphere creates a very special environment. Its close articulation with research projects developed at the Educational Research and Intervention Centre (rated Excellent by FCT), as well as the quality of doctoral supervision, results in relevant work that can indeed make a difference.

The programme combines the development of an individual thesis with a structured curricular component, combining advanced scientific training with the development of original and socially relevant research. The first curricular year is divided among Curricular Units that focus on major themes and questions in the educational field and provide in-depth knowledge and the capacity for critical analysis of research methodologies in education. The curricular load is significantly lower in the second year, for greater focus on research development, culminating in the third year with the conclusion and public defence of the individual thesis.

Target groups:

The PDCE is designed to host students with strong research interests in the area of Education Sciences, and is particularly targeted to:

  1. Holders of a Master's degree or legal equivalent in Education Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities or related areas;
  2. Holders of a First degree in Educational Sciences, Social and Human Sciences or related areas, with an academic or scientific curriculum especially relevant and recognized by the Scientific Committee as attesting the capacity to carry out the PDCE;
  3. Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Committee as attesting to the capacity to carry out the PDCE.

By providing a space for the development of broad, systematic understanding in the area of Education Sciences and enabling to conceive, design, adapt and carry out original and significant research, respecting the requirements imposed by the standards of quality and academic integrity, contributing to widen the frontiers ofknowledge in the Education Sciences/Social Sciences and Humanities, the programme prepares students for the development and/or enhancement of a professional career in Scientific Research; Teaching and Training; Administration of Educational Organizations; Project Management; Educational Services for Children, Youth and Senior Citizens.
