European Master of Development Studies in Social and Educational Sciences

Access requirements:

  • first degree in Educational Science or in an area of the Social and Human Sciences with the minimum final average grade of 14 values (Portuguese evaluating scale: from 0 to 20)
  • To have a suitable curriculum vitæ
  • To be approved to fill a vacancy in a Master course
  • The Scientific Board of our Faculty can, in exceptional cases, accept the application of a student that achieved less than 14 values in his first degree (Licenciado). However, in these cases, the students must prove to have acquired sufficient scientific knowledge and to show a suitable curriculum vitæ.

The Master courses last 4 semesters:

  • 1st and 2nd semester - academic course
  • 2nd and 3rd semester - writing the dissertation

Teaching goals:

- General:

  • To acquire deepened scientific knowledge in the field of Educational Sciences;
  • To acquire knowledge about the theoretical and methodological necessary devices to the development of research projects;
  • To develop intervention competences in the different fields of human and social development.

- Specifics:

  • To promote the understanding of social discrimination dimensions in Europe;
  • To develop views and strategies to enable an “European social community”;
  • To promote deepened training in the field of human rights and social justice.

Academic and Scientific Competences:

- General:

  • To develop deepened research in the field of Educational Sciences autonomously;
  • To integrate, participate and promote research and intervention team work;
  • To conceive, develop and plan graduate and specialized training programmes and projects.

- Specifics:

  • To be able to represent a key role in the promotion of inclusive citizenship;
  • To be able to investigate social exclusion/inclusion, particularly in western societies;
  • To be able to intervene upon social exclusion/inclusion, focussing three target groups: migrants, persons under custody, poor people.

Professional Contexts:

  • Teaching and research in Higher Education;
  • Superior Educational Technicians working in European, national and local institutions;
  • Trainer of Trainers; social animators and managers in the field of social politics;
  • Coordination and orientation of intervention teams against social exclusion;
  • Research on social policies.
