  • Identify the advantages and limitations of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection  and analyses, in particular ethical considerations and the implications for interpreting and generalizing study results.

Learning outcomes and competences

1.Critically evaluate knowledge produced in Psychology, as a result of the experience of participating in research in the natural environment, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies;

2.Improve research and literature review skills and communication of concepts and empirical results that allow the formulation and substantiation of research questions and hypotheses;

3.Deepen and consolidate skills on data collection, data analysis and interpretation and discussion of results.

4.Understand the articulation of the phases of the process leading to the building of knowledge in Psychology, applying qualitative and quantitative methodology skills;

5.Evaluate advantages and limitations of studies, in particular ethical considerations and lessons for interpretation and generalization of results from qualitative and quantitative studies;

6.Identification of practice implications of studies conducted in Psychology.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The teaching methodology is theoretical-practical and laboratory, taking place in the context of small groups: working groups are formed in each class.

Theoretical expositions focus the initial presentation of the problem under study and brief systematization of acquired content, especially in the courses of Research Methods in Psychology, Writing and Science, Statistics Applied to Psychology I and II, Psychological Assessment, Psychometrics and theories of Psychological Evaluation, and Communication Techniques and Interview in Psychology.

Teachers guide, discuss and supervise tasks performed by students in a semi-autonomous way.

Eligibility for exams

Classes are mandatory for all students.
Students who miss more than 25% of the classes will not obtain attendance (in accordance with paragraph 2 of Article 9 of the Assessment Regulations).

Students who are legally exempted from classes attendance must conduct all evaluation components defined above. They must contact the teachers until the 2nd class.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final grade considers:

1. Drawing up an observation grid and objectives (20%).
2. Content analysis report on observational data (30%)
3. Oral presentation of a quantitative research plan (20%)
4. Written quantitative research plan, in accordance with APA standards (30%).

To be approved students must have: 1) a minimal of 8 in each of the assessment components; and 2) minimal final grade of 10 (ponto 2, Artº 4 do Regulamento geral para avaliação dos discentes da FPCEUP).

The final classification is obtained considering evaluation components outlined above.
The ratings in each of the components and the final classification will be communicated to students on a scale of 0 to 20.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students with special status whose enjoyment of their rights may have implications for the planned assessment should contact their teachers by the 2nd lesson so that alternative attendance and assessment procedures can be defined, if necessary.

Classification improvement

Until the time of appeal of the academic year following the one in which the approval was obtained, the student may improve the grade, only once.
The improvement consists of drawing up a mixed mehtods research plan, qualitative and quantitative, and a reflection on the skills developed, corresponding to 50% of the final assessment.
