Objectives
The aim of this curricular unit is to provide students with a global and critical view of the main literature on deviant behavior in the field of neurosciences, so that students are able to identify the main psychobiological factors of deviant behavior and understand their interactions with factors of the same and other natures, as well as interpret and communicate the results arising from the assessment devices of psychobiological factors involved in deviant behavior.
Learning outcomes and competences
The learning outcomes and skills that are expected at the end of this course are:
1. the ability to identify the main deviant behavior psychobiological factors and understand their interactions with similar and different factors;
2.
the ability to search, review and develop critical understanding, concerning to the main literature about deviant behavior within the neurosciences framework;
3. to be able to select, interpret, synthesize, and communicate results obtained by means of bibliographic reviews concerning the main psychobiological factors involved in the deviant behavior.

Program
After an introduction to the course, the syllabus is structured into two main modules:
Module 1 - Criminal and antisocial behavior:
1.1. Neurobiology of psychopathy and sociopathy
1.2. Mental illness and criminal behavior
1.3. Psychobiological bases of violent criminal behavior
1.4. Research at the Laboratory of Neuropsychophysiology on this topic
1.5. Application of the contents and concepts to case studies/practical situations
Module 2 - Drug and behavioral addiction:
2.1. Neurobiology of drug addiction and its behavioral consequences
2.2. Research with animal models
2.3. Neurobiological factors of psychopharmacological intervention
2.4. Neural bases of behavioral addictions (e.g., pathological gambling)
2.5. Neuro-emotional model of addictive behaviors
2.6. Application of the contents and concepts to case studies/practical situations

Calculation formula of final grade
Average of the grades obtained in the tests (scored from 0 to 20 points) at the end of each of the modules. For approval, a minimum grade of 8.0 points is required in each test and an overall average that is equal to or greater than 9.5 points. Students that do not get approved in the abovementioned tests will have access to an appeal evaluation that will be booked in accordance with the students. Please notice that there are NO FINAL EXAMS. There will be no other evaluations, besides the above mentioned ones.
