The objective of this course is mainly the practical application, systematization and integration of the knowledge already acquired. It is specifically intended that students:
1. Differentiate the application of qualitative and quantitative methodologies in research in Psychology;
2. Implement different stages of the research process, including the definition and substantiation of research questions and hypotheses;
3. Collect empirical data, using research tools, and assess of their qualities, conduct data analysis and interpretation and discussion of results;
4. Identify advantages and limitations of the conduted study, in particular regarding ethical considerations and lessons for interpretation and generalization of results from their qualitative and quantitative study;
5.Identify the implications for the practice of the conducted study.1.Critically evaluate knowledge produced in Psychology, as a result of the experience of participating in research in the natural environment, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies;
2.Improve research and literature review skills and communication of concepts and empirical results that allow the formulation and substantiation of research questions and hypotheses;
3.Deepen and consolidate data collection skills using research tools, and assessment of their qualities, data analysis and interpretation and discussion of results.
4.Understand the articulation of the phases of the process leading to the building of knowledge in Psychology, applying in an integrated way the qualitative and quantitative methodology skills;
5.Evaluate advantages and limitations of studies, in particular ethical considerations and lessons for interpretation and generalization of results from qualitative and quantitative studies;
6.Identification of the implications for the practice of the conducted study.- Literature review to select the most relevant bibliographical references for the formulation and foundation of research questions and hypotheses.
- Selection and / or development of data collection instruments, assessing their suitability and quality;
- Selection and contact of participants for the quantitative and qualitative sample, appropriate to the research questions and hypotheses, assuring a free and informed consent.
- Data collection from the selected sample, using instruments.
- Data coding, insertion, processing and analysis, applying inductive and deductive content analysis procedures and the most appropriate statistical procedures taking into account the characteristics of the data and the formulated research questions and hypotheses.
- Interpretation and discussion of the quantitative and qualitative results obtained and their oral presentation.
- Writing of a scientific article on the mixed study conducted during the semester.The teaching methodology is theoretical-practical and laboratory, taking place in the context of small groups: working groups are formed in each class.
Theoretical expositions focus the initial presentation of the problem under study and brief systematization of acquired content, especially in the courses of Research Methods in Psychology, Writing and Science, Statistics Applied to Psychology I and II, Psychological Assessment, Psychometrics and theories of Psychological Evaluation, and Communication Techniques and Interview in Psychology.
Teachers guide, discuss and supervise tasks performed by students in a semi-autonomous way.

The final grade considers:
1. Final oral presentation of the conducted research - group work (25%).
2. Project Preparation: portfolio that includes all the work developed in the context of the PL classes (25%).
3. Scientific paper written by group, according to APA rules (50%).
To be approved students must have: 1) a minimal of 8 in each of the assessment components; and 2) minimal final grade of 10 (ponto 2, Artº 4 do Regulamento geral para avaliação dos discentes da FPCEUP).
The final classification is obtained considering evaluation components outlined above.
The ratings in each of the components and the final classification will be communicated to students on a scale of 0 to 20.
