Objectives

(1) To identify the mechanisms of acquisition of knowledge and behaviour;
(2) To identify and understand the main types of learning and explanatory theories;
(3) To know and understand some of the most relevant scientific learning literature;
(4) To know classical studies about different types of human memory;
(5) To describe and understand the various types of memory, capacity, limits and main concepts and theories;
(6) To know and understand the literature in the field of memory, specially the experimental cognitive approaches.
(7) To apply some of the knowledge about memory to the school and daily situations.
(8) To participate in small experiments creation, integrating knowledge and experience.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of this course students should be able to: (1) Describe and understand different types of memory, capacity limits, in addition to the main concepts and explanatory theories; (2) Know, understand and communicate the most relevant literature in this area; (3) Apply some of the acquired knowledge to school and everyday settings; (4) Participate in laboratory tasks and experiments, integrating memory knowledge and personal experience.

(1) Introduction to the human memory; Measurement of human memory; Theories and explanations of human forgetting;

(2) Sensorial auditory and visual memory; Short-term memory (STM); Working memory (WM);

(3) Long-term memory (LTM); Consolidation processes in LTM; Retrieval in LTM;

(4) Autobiographical memory; Memory deficits and excesses;

(5) Conclusion: Memory centrality on personality and identity.

Eligibility for exams

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification is the result of:

Students must obtain at least 10 marks in 20 to pass the exam and be approved.

Special assignments are provided only for students with special needs who can not attend classes in whole or in part, and the required assignment can be adapted to each special case. It is also possible to provide special sssignments to Erasmus students on request in the first class.
