Objectives

- To describe the neurobiological basis of behaviour.

- To explain the psychobiological basis of some of the most prevalent mental disorders.

- To explain the psychopathology and its impact on functionality.

Learning outcomes and competences

The syllabus is consistent with the objectives, since the curricular unit has been designed to allow the students to introduce themselves into the brain anatomy and the anatomo-physiological processes underlying the human behaviour, as the basis to the subsequent teaching-learning process related to the psychobiological basis of some of the most common mental disorders. Similarly the characteristic symptoms of mental disorders it will be approached, exploring their impact on human functioning and clarifying the relations between these two topics.

- The neurobiological basis of behavior: phylogenetic development; anatomy and systems of neurotransmitters; orbitofrontal cortex; hippocampal formation; subcortical limbic structures; anterior cingulate subcortical circuit; subcortical circuit of the orbitofrontal cortex.

- Psychobiological basis of mental disorders: disturbances of mood; anxiety disorders; schizophrenia; obsessive-compulsive disorder; addictive behaviors.

- Psychopathology and its relations with different functional domains.

Eligibility for exams

The students must have the minimum of 9.5 points in 20 at final evaluation.

The presence in class is mandatory according to the regulation in force in FPCEUP.

The final classification is obtained with the final written work, which represents 100% of the classification.

The discipline uses Moodle platform.

This master is teach with the collaboration of ESTSP-IPP; some of the bibliography can be found at this school.

Considering the operational recommendations for the maintenance of presence format of school and non-school activities, but in the impossibility of ensuring the face-to-face operation of all school activities of the 1st semester of 2020/2021 in the current pandemic context, due to the lack of physical facilities capable of safely accommodating the number of students in this cycle of studies, this UC will take place totally at a distance format, with synchronous moments, making use of telematic procedures.
