Objectives

The general goal of the various MTP Seminars is to deepen the knowledge and skills that allow a proficient and critical use of research in the field of Psychology and to plan the development of an individual original research, empirical or theoretical, in a specific field of Psychology.

In this course, students will become familiar with and learn to identify the most relevant textbooks, reviews, papers and journals for their research topics. The students will also learn how to critically assess research papers and to point out to research gaps that can be operationalized into feasible research questions.

Specifically, in a specific field of Psychology, the goals are to understand:

1- How to review scientific literature

2- How to review the literature critically

3- How to systematize relevant information about theoretical and methodological frameworks

4- How to frame a research question

 

 

 

Learning outcomes and competences

1- To select appropriate data sources for a specific Psychology domain

2- To critically evaluate the literature

3- To write an overview of the relevant literature for a specific Psychology research topic, including

3.1- To formulate clear research questions appropriate for the topic of the seminar

3.2- To construct an argument and to identify evidence appropriate for examining the research question

3.3- To incorporate and cite pertinent evidence in a manner that meets the standards of Psychology scientific writing

Eligibility for exams

Students must attend at least 75% of the Contact Hours, and submit a written essay, in which they must achieve the minimum grade of 9. 5 out of 20.

Calculation formula of final grade

The final classification is obtained by the supervisor continuous evaluation (representing 50% of the final classification) and by the written essay (representing 50% of the final classification).

Without prejudice to the rights legally granted to them, given the nature of the UC, student workers and beneficiaries of comparable statutes must comply with the requirements of attendance.

Students with special needs (eg, hearing or motor impairment) must inform the teacher (s) at the beginning of the semester in order to ensure the necessary conditions.

Classification improvement

The improvement of classification is possible, only for the written essay, and according to the rules of FPCEUP.

Observations

Considering the operational recommendations for maintaining teaching and non-teaching activities in person, but in the impossibility of guaranteeing the presence of all the teaching activities of the 1st semester of 2020/2021 in the current pandemic context, due to the lack of physical facilities capable of accommodating with security the number of students in this cycle of studies, the orientation component of this UC will take place partially at a distance, with synchronous moments, using telematic means.
