Objectives
The family as an educational institution is the central object of this curricular unit. Taking as a disciplinary framework the sociology of the family, structuring dimensions of the thematic and the programmatic contents are the approach of the transformations of the family in a sociological perspective and historical partner; The structures and dynamics of family relations in contemporary societies; The emergence and centrality of children and schools in family life and family education; The family and parenting as a field of research and as a field of social intervention in the field of protection of children and youth.
This curricular unit aims to provide the students with intellectual contributions capable of contributing to: i) the knowledge of the family in a sociological perspective, namely those that concern the transformation of family morphology in the contemporaneousness (constitution, dimension and structure of families); Ii) the knowledge of the family as an educational institution, especially in relation to the relationship with the school; Iii) family education as an object of research and as an object of intervention.v
Learning outcomes and competences
1. The domain of theoretical knowledge about the family articulating the sociological perspective with the educational perspective, according to the topics i) family transformations in contemporaneity, changes in family relations; Ii) the family in an educational perspective, educational styles, relation with the school and educational intervention with families;
2. Formulate research topics about the family from a socio-educational perspective and be able to produce a theoretical and methodologically based written document: (i) revealing competence to identify, collect, select and interpret relevant national, European and international information (statistics , Legal, research, intervention, ii) critically reflecting a socio-educational intervention perspective;
3. Demonstration of knowledge about authors and sources in family education as an object of research and as an object of intervention.

II - Transformation of the familiar morphology in the contemporaneity. 1. Dimension, structure and dynamics of domestic groups. 2 Constitution, size and structure of contemporary families.
III - Modernity and Family 1.The family as an affective unit: dynamics, problems, tensions. 2.Transformation of the functions and status of the child in the family.
IV - Family and Family Education 1. Family functions, strategies and styles 2. Family relations with the school: continuities, discontinuities and tensions.
V- Family and social intervention. 1. Emergence and development of Education / Parental Training 2. Problems, Contexts and practices and privileged socio-educational intervention with families.

Teaching methods and learning activities
In the contact time, distributed by the themes of the program (two classes per subject) and the tutorials to guide the work, the students are initiated in the knowledge of this discipline, so that they become competent in its use, operating it in the production of An investigative document articulated with the educational intervention.
The theoretical-practical contact time includes: exposition by the teacher; Analysis of various documents - theoretical, statistical, news, literary, plastic arts (painting); debate; Guidance for the preparation of evaluation work. In autonomous time there is room for reading and analyzing texts; Choice of a theme in the program for the work, group formation (2 students) or individual work, bibliographical research of diverse sources; Writing.
In this UC, the evaluation is done with delivery of final written work (100%).

This curricular unit is used to verify attendance. Students should be weighed in 75% of classes taught.
Calculation formula of final grade
Evaluation components for the evaluation of the cU it is proposed a) a research work carried out individually or in groups during the semester, under the theme to be chosen / indicated, guided in the tutorial sessions scheduled for this purpose; The group will have a maximum of 2 elements. The work will be delivered in the normal time of exams with the possibility of reformulation / improvement in the time of appeal. The work will be classified in a scale of 0 to 20 and presents a quotation of 100% in the final grade.
Failure to carry out the proposed work implies failure of the uc.

Classification improvement
According to the Regulation of the principles to be observed in the evaluation of the students of the University of Porto and specific norms to apply in the courses of Sciences of Education and Psychology of the FPCE.
The TE or any other students that use the Special Time must imperatively combine with the teacher during the semester in which the uc is taught, the modality of evaluation.
Observations
The contact time of the uc is distributed in lecture time and tutorial time. The tutorial time (7 to 9 hours) will be used to guide the written work. The evaluation of the works and the publication of the classifications will take place during the non-academic period.
