Objectives

At the end of the semester, students should have obtained an integrated perspective on the phenomena of inclusion and exclusion in various contexts of social life, in particular, in small interactive groups, of relations in communities or society in general. 

Learning outcomes and competences

The purpose of this perspective is that students will obtain increased capacities to analyze and act upon occurrences of bullying, mobbing, ostracization of individuals and groups, exclusion of minorities from broad social life.

Basic cognitive and motivational processes associated with inclusion and exclusion. Levels and contexts of inclusion and exclusion. Sources and targets of social exclusion. 1. Inclusion and exclusion of individuals in their social environment Ostracism and ostracization. Stigma and stigmatization. 2. Inclusion and exclusion in groups Motives and processes in the management of group composition. Group cohesion and inclusion and exclusion of members 3. Inclusion and exclusion of social groups Assimilation versus integration of minorities. Intergroup contact: desegregation and the role of interpersonal relations in promoting the inclusion of social groups. The common in-group identity model: interactions between superordinate and subordinate categories.

Assessment is based on the conception and implementation of a group activity to be conducted in the classroom (50%) and on the elaboration of the report (50%).
