. To distinguish sex and gender; to understand the evolution of theories and analyze the influence of sex differentiation on life, society and on individual well being.
. To critically analyse some forms of sex based differentiation and social discrimination:
a) On the experience of adult roles, in order to (i) describe, understand and assess theoretical models and empirical studies on the theme; (ii) analyze and identify, potentialities and limitations, in the Portuguese context, of responses to the difficulties of role management at the individual, marital, family, organizational and social level.
b) On sexual orientation, in order to (i) understand the psychological approaches on life experiences of LGBT individuals; (ii) to reduce the heterosexist bias, prejudice and discrimination against identity and sexual minorities, improving the quality of research and psychological practice.

1-Introduction to the psychology of gender: Different theoretical perspectives on gender identity; social construction of gender - social category and stereotypes.
2-Sexual and Gender Diversity: Historical and psychological perspectives on sexual orientation; Sexual identities and LGBT gender (multidimensionality and developmental perspectives), sexual diversity, gender and prejudice against LGBT people (characteristics, trends and associated factors) in Portugal, Europe and in the rest of the world; sexual diversity, gender and family; relationships between same sex individuals, LGBT parenting.
3-The management of family, professional and parental roles: National and international context; gender and division of family labor, models of work and family roles management; dynamics in managing roles (dual employment families, dyadic and intergenerational relationships); the role of organizations and community in the management of roles; intentions to parent, gender and management of roles.
Proximity activities: presentation and discussion of theories and research in the field of gender studies around two specific themes. Activities performed both in small and large group, illustrated with case studies or videos.
Conduct a survey (small groups) framed on the CU related topics, with tutorial support provided by young researchers with studies in the selected fields. Comprises critically analyzing research papers and texts; defining objectives and hypotheses; defining a research design; preparing an instrument for data collection (interview guide or questionnaire); data collection; data analysis and presentation of results in the form of a poster.
Discussion of the work with teachers/researchers external to the CU.

Evaluation focuses (i) on the autonomous work (active participation in meetings with tutors)(20%), (ii) preparation, presentation and discussion of the poster (70%), (iii) presence and active participation in classes (10%).
