Objectives

1. To understand and apply procedures from univaried, descriptive and inferential statistics appropriately by using statistical software such as SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). 2. To select and apply in a critical and substantiated way the most appropriate statistical procedure. 3. To present results using tables and graphs and interpret the results correctly. 4. To carry out simple studies where these procedures are applied. 5. To use statistical language in understanding and writing research reports.

Learning outcomes and competences

Using SPSS for recording and analyzing data. - Application and understanding of descriptive and inferential statistics. - Use of hypotheses testing in response to research questions.

Working method

Presencial

Program

1. Fundamental notions on variables and variable classification systems and samples. 2. Building a data file on SPSS. 3. Statistical procedures to organize and characterize data: frequency distribution, graphic representations and summarize statistics. 4. Theoretical distribution of probabilities: normal distribution. 5. Estimation Theory. Notion of estimator, sampling distribution, characteristics of the sampling distribution of some statistics. 6. Methods to estimate parameters.

Assessment Components

designation Weight (%)
Exame 60,00
Participação presencial 0,00
Trabalho escrito 40,00
Total: 100,00

Amount of time allocated to each course unit

designation Time (hours)
Estudo autónomo 91,50
Frequência das aulas 38,50
Trabalho de investigação 32,00
Total: 162,00

Eligibility for exams

• Minimal acceptable attendance is 75% of the classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

The classification will be the result of the sum of the final exam grade and the written work grade. NOte: Students must obtain a minimun grade of 8 in the final exam component.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

The students under special evaluation circumstances (in what concerns attendance) take a practical exam in the last week of classes, with the rate of 20 points, which will include all the contents of the course. The lack of a classification, or obtaining a classification under 8 points, will lead to failing the subject.

Classification improvement

The students will be able to take an exam to improve their final exam grade in one of the period immediately following the one when they obtained approval.
