Objectives

Course goals: Students should be able to: (1) know the major basic and complex learning mechanisms; (2) understand and discuss the various learning types and major theories and models; (3) outline some of the major literature references and communicate information about this area; (4) attend as subjects in small experiments and demonstrations in order to integrate information and skills.

Learning outcomes and competences

Outcomes: At the end of the course, students should be able to: (1) know and understand basic and complex learning mechanisms; (2) describe and explain the various learning types and major theories and models; (3) apply the acquired knowledge to practical situations, such as school learning in university settings; (4) analyse, write and communicate information about learning in order to integrate information and skills.

  2. What is learning for the science of learning? Definition, scope and types of learning

  3. Learning types and theories:


    1. habituation

    2. classical conditioning

    3. operant conditioning

    4. verbal learning; Concept acquisition and representation

    5. observational learning.


  4. Practical applications in clinical and educational settings, such as behavior therapy and e.learning.

  5. School learning: How to improve learning from a cognitive psychology viewpoint.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Most classes are tutorial and they are supported by PPTs, video clips, a few demonstrations and experiments, timely class discussions and occasional brief assessments of the current class.

Observations

Observations: Portuguese is the language of course instruction, but English can be used for Erasmus students on individual tutorials. Students are required to visit the course website P104 at least once a week where important documents are organised in the following folders: 1. Program and class summary; 2. PPTs shown in class in a pdf format; 3.Compulsory and optional paper readings; 4.Urgent notices; 5.Types of exam questions, grades and observations.
