This curricular unit aims to broaden the study of the modalities of intervention in the field of social work, specifically the social mediation and local action approaches as alternative modalities of political and cognitive definition of social problems.
Aims:
To politically and historically contextualize the issues of social mediation and the local action dimensions in the transition froma societarian organizationfocusedon the state toamarket oriented society;
To understand the central role of conflict in the diverse approaches to mediation and the diverse visions of the social role of subjects it implies;
To distinguish different perspectives guiding the mediation intervention.
Competencies:
Identification of distinct approaches of conflict mediation and their adequacyin intervention contextsby means of multiple case analyses;
Activatedevices of mediationby contextualising the conflict situations.
Program
Part One - General framework
1 – Social and cognitive production of the concept of social mediation.
1.1 - The crisis ofmacro-social integration devices: work, school and the political dimension.
2 - Socialspacesand time heterogeneity.
3 - The ambiguities of the revaluationof the localscalein social problems management. The diverse “local” meanings:from cyber-place to rural worldunderstood as "landscape keeper".
4 - New configurations of social policies, devicesand management agents: from social "zapping" to social mediation.
5 - Cognitiveandpolitical dimensionsto consider in the construction of intervention alternatives.
Part Two – Fields, models and intervention practices by means of mediation: case studies
6 – The mediation spaces:professional agents/intervention devices.
6.1. Theconflict as an object of synthesis:the mediatoras the 3rdexcluded.
6.2. Theconflict as an object of mobilization:the mediatoras the 3rd included.
7 – Mediation in school contexts.

Two hour sessions,in atheoretical and practical program, are organizedas follows:
The firstfivesessionsare devoted to the content of the 1st Part of the program and intend to provide anoverall frameworkof the problematic of social mediation;
The nextsixsessions will focuson the 2nd part of the program. The institutionalization of the mediation processes as an intervention strategy and thesystematization of mediationmodels of that follow this process will be discussed. In the second part case studies ofsocial interventionsbased on themediation willbe presented,analyzed and discussed.
The last two sessions aim atdevelopinga holistic approach to the learning content as well asdiscussionson the assessment work plan proposed by the students.

Calculation of final mark
The final gradeis based on anindividual essaythat can takeoneof following three forms:
Based on the theoretical contributionsin the field of mediation, the students will analyse acase involvingasituation ofsocial intervention (in a broad sense).The caseor situationto be analyzed maybe proposedby students andagreed upon with theteachersof the curricular unit;
Based on the modes of definition and the approaches tosocial interventionor management of conflictspresented in the sessions, the students will further (re)conceptualise and reconfiguredthework already completedorin progressduring thesemester in another curricular unit;
Based on the theoretical contributionsin the field of mediation, the students will develop an analysis, limitedin its length, of the process experienced in themaster’s course or a specific content,theme orissue relevant for preparationof the dissertation.
In any case,the essaymust have amaximum of 10to 15 pages.
It is an individual essay and will be evaluated as 90% of the final grade. Teacherscan use theremaining 10% of the total grade toevaluate student’s participationand attendance.
The final mark of the curricular unit is express in a 0-20 scale.
Assignment evaluation criteria:
The coherenceand consistency of the theoreticalanalysisproduced;
Personal and critical appropriationof the theoretical contributionsin the production of the analysis and the development of the arguments.

Special assessment (working students, union leaders, ...)
Students legally authorised to not attending the sessions must deliver an individual essay (15 to 20 pages) and discuss it with the curricular unit teachers. This aims at assessing the achievement of the curricular unit competences and learning-outcomes.
This essay aims to summarize andcriticallyaddressthe wholeorpart of the themesof the Curricular Unit,particularly the contributions of mediation tothe definition ofsocial problemsand interventionin socialand educational fields.

To improve the final grade students must deliver an individual essay (15 to 20 pages) and discuss it with the teachers of the curricular unit. The essay is supposed tosummarize andcriticallyaddressthe wholeorpart of the themesof theCurricular Unit particularly the contributions of mediation tothe definition ofsocial problemsand interventionin socialand educational fields.
