Objectives

Policies for Inclusion and Community Intervention aims at to develop students abilities to understand and to interpret Social Policy and social policies within various analytical and interventive fields. The place of exclusion/inclusion within social policies is another dimension to be analised along the course, both reflecting on related problems and socio-political interventions to be addressed. The Portuguese social policy context will be analised on its emergency, development and ongoing situation at the community intervention. Course Main Goals
i) To discuss conceptions of Social Policy and Social Inclusion/Social Exclusion
ii) To identify and analyse policies oriented to Social Inclusion
iii) To reflect on the role and influence of supranational agencies, principles and proposals
iv) To reflect Portuguese reality, its trajectory and current situation on the field of social policies toward social inclusion.
v) To define and to debate the place of community intervention within the field of social policies.
SKILLS
i) To be able to learn and to interpret social policy and policies on their various domains
ii) To be able to analyse contemporary social problems, namely social exclusion
iii) To be able to analyse measures and policies addressed to face contemporary problems and their diverse scales (local, national and supranational)
iv) To be able to conceive and to propose initiatives and measures in specific domains of social policy.

Presentations by the teacher followed by debate. Students are invited to present and to conduct debates with colleagues on relevant topics of the course

Students must attend at least 75% of the sessions

Calculation formula of final grade

The assessment process is made of the following elements:
- participation in the classroom activities and presentations by students – 40%
- writing a 3000 paper (bibliographic references included) on a specific theme (to be agreed) – 60%

Examinations or Special Assignments

The students legally authorized to not attending the sessions will deliver, besides the paper referred to above, two reports on the bibliography related with 2 of the 4 modules of the course

Classification improvement
