Objectives
Throughout this course the student will learn the following skills:
1. To understand the historical development of family therapy.
2. To reflect upon the family dialectical process of development
3. To define the concepts of transition, change, and crisis; and to integrate this concepts according to a life cycle perspective.
4. To analyze the different relationships within the family structure taking a dialectical and developmental focus.
5. To use systems theory in the analysis of clinical cases; to draw hypotheses, plan and implement intervention strategies according to a specific life cycle stage.
6. Understand the need for openness, flexibility and ethics implied in the therapeutic process.
Program
1. The psychological development of a family and its members throughout the life cycle.
2. Family therapy: how to intervene using Systems Theory, following developmental, dialectical, circular and contextual perspectives.
3. Life cycle stages- characteristics, consequences, psychological determinants, evaluation and intervention: parent-child relationships throughout the life cycle; pregnancy; infertility; divorce; remarriage; family therapy.

Eligibility for exams
• Minimal acceptable attendance is 75% of the classes.
• The students must obtain the minimal grade of 8 points in the different evaluation components.
Calculation formula of final grade
The classification will be the result of the sum of the final exam grade (50%), active participation in class and observation of psychotherapy sessions and respective clinical reports (50%)

Mobility and MTP students should write an assignment and complete an exam about one of the course’s themes.

Observations
Important note:
To be able to take this course the student must also attend the Intervention Processes in Sexuality and Marital Systems course as a pre-requisite to observe clinical cases. It is expected that students attend the Intervention Processes in Developmental Transitions and Disorders.
