Objectives

This curricular unit aims at providing students an understanding of mediation as citizenship promoting device, institutional device and conflict resolution strategy. It also aims at identifying and discussing potentialities and limitations of mediation as an instrument for managing social change and social conflicts, especially in educational contexts.
Therefore, this curricular unit entails a detailed consideration of the nature of conflicts, and of the parties involved in negotiation and mediation processes.
This curricular unit also aims at contributing to the analysis and configuration of the figures of mediation in the educational field.
The expected learning outcomes of this unit are the following:
- identification of the nature of conflicts, considering the characteristics of the parties involved;
- planning and conduction of mediation process;
- understanding of basic distributive and integrative negotiation strategies;
- planning interventions in social-educational contexts.
By the end of this curricular unit, students should have acquired the following competences:
- the ability to employ basic negotiation techniques;
- the ability to act as a mediator.

3) the mediator's role: ethical and technical elements;
4) conducting a mediation process;
5) mediation in educational contexts: experiences, competences, figures.

Eligibility for exams

The evaluation process requires that students attend classes, without prejudice of what is stated in item 4, article 9 of the evaluation regulation.

Calculation formula of final grade

Distributed evaluation without final exam:

a) written test: 40%
b) participation in the e-learning platform: 35%
c) performance in negotiation role-plays: 25%

Examinations or Special Assignments

Any student with a mark below 8 in any of the evaluation components will have to reformulate that component in order to remain in the continuous evaluation process.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

Students which by law are not obliged to attend classes will have to do an extra oral examination.
