Objectives

(1) To expose and discuss the major research topics in the area of human memory, in particular models and memory processes and the various types considered, (2) To present and discuss neurological cases of deficits and excesses of memory and how the analysis of these cases contributed to the improvement of the latest models of memory, (3) Provide students with the opportunity to participate in tasks and experiments of some of the most representative types of memory

Learning outcomes and competences

Objectivos / Course goals At the end of the course, students should be able to: (1) Understand and describe memory types and major concepts, know their limits and capacities and comprehend major theories and models; (2) Read, know and understand the major literature references; (3) Examine, write and communicate information about this area; (4) Apply the knowledge acquired to practical situations; (5) Attend as subjects in small experiments and demonstrations in order to integrate information and skills.

Programa / programme: 1. Definition, models, types and landmarks in the history of the psychology of human memory. 2. Quantitative and qualitative methods of measuring memory. 3. Theories and explanations of human forgetting. 4. Sensory memories: Visual and auditory. 5. Short-term memory and working memory: Capacity, coding and duration. 6. Long-term memory: Dissociations, representative types and models. 7. Long-term memory and consolidation processes: Repetition, imagery, mnemonics and storage techniques. 8. Long-term memory: Remembering and false memories. 9. Autobiographical memory: Flashbulb memories and distribution of life-long memories. 10. Memory deficits and excesses: Analysis of some representative cases. 11. Conclusion: Memory, personal identity and personality.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Métodos de ensino / Teaching methods 1. Tutorial classes; 2-Readings and watching small movies and videos, participation in experiments; 3-Individual study and group discussion. Classes are taught on a cognitive and experimental framework and have a major component of theorethical and experimental analysis, supported by roundtable discussions and implementation of small demonstrations. There will also be an invitation to participate in experiments and demonstrations in the laboratory of experimental psychology during the semester.

Eligibility for exams

Obtenção da frequência / Eligibility 1. Considering the large number of students enrolled, the class attendance is not mandatory, and students who do not attend classes are elegible for final exam, or both intermediate tests. It is important to note that class attendance and exercises that are performed in classes prepare students to obtain a better final grade.

Calculation formula of final grade

Cálculo da classificação final / Calculation of final grade 1. The assessment is done exclusively by final written exam in Normal and Appeal seasons. Examination at the Normal season can be replaced by the joint evaluation of two interim tests, one conducted during the 7th school week and the second test on the penultimate or last week of the semester

Provas e trabalhos especiais / Supplementary work The Special Assignments are provided only for students with special needs who can not attend classes in whole or in part, and the required assignment can be adapted to each special case. It is also possible to provide Special Assignments to Erasmus students on request in the first class.

Classification improvement

Melhoria da classificação final-distribuída/ Attempts to improve the final grade. According to Faculty regulations.  Students who  are approved in the two intermediate tests may require to improve their grades in the next examination season.

Observations

Observações / Comments and Observations Portuguese is the language of course instruction, but English can be used for Erasmus students on individual tutorials. Students are required to consult the folder "Documents" on the website P201 in SIGARRA. Within this folder there are several files to support lessons. The UC-P201 has also a discussion forum and a database on Moodle in order to promote the interactive component of teaching.
