Abstract (EN): The reduction of nitric oxide by carbon monoxide on the (1 0 0) surface of platinum is studied using synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It is found that NO dissociates more readily than previously thought and dissociation is found to yield different oxygen species. The removal of one of these dissociation products is suggested to be the rate determining step of the NO-CO reaction under the applied conditions. Furthermore, the adsorption of CO is found to depend strongly on the presence of the other surface species.
