Summary: |
The Centre of Studies on Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT) is a research center, recognized formally by the FCT in 2008. It results from a cooperative effort between the investigators of the Departments of Geography of the Universities of Coimbra, Porto and Minho.
The center is organized in three large groups in accordance to the research expertise of its investigators which translate theoretical and applied research in Geography:
1. Nature and Environmental Dynamics
2. Cities, competitiveness and wellbeing
3. Cultural Landscapes, tourism and development
In order to promote theoretical and applied research, each one of these groups is divided into thematic teams composed of investigators of different universities.
The requirement of the times we live in and the problems of the territories in which it operates the CEGOT do not allow betting only on the continuity. Therefore, CEGOT sees the period 2015-2020 as a challenge, given the duty that the institution has with society, which increases the demand for effectiveness and efficiency.
In order to promote research about the great themes and problems that affect societies and territories at different scales which go from the local, to the regional and to the national, the center proposes the constitution of five great research themes:
1. Coastal zone dynamics and fragilities
2. Natural and anthropogenic hazards, social vulnerability and risks
3. Urbanization, Health & Sustainability
4. Public policies and territorial development
5. Tourism and leisure
Research in these new themes will have the participation, when possible, of investigators from the 3 groups and from the 3 universities that compose the CEGOT. The goal is to give answers to the growing demands of a modern research with thematic emphasis that are in accordance to European standards and also to give a holistic integrated and coherent answer to the important questions of our contemporary society and spatial development .

The goal is to give answers to the growing demands of a modern research with thematic emphasis that are in accordance to European standards and also to give a holistic integrated and coherent answer to the important questions of our contemporary society and spatial development .
The biannual electronic journal GOT, started in 2012 and with four issues published so far, welcomes the participation of researchers not geographers or not belonging to CEGOT (national and foreign), will allow both the publication of the research work produced in the CEGOT as well as the interaction between its investigators with the national and international scientific community. It is also the CEGOT´s goal to continue the regular publication of this journal and to make it an international indexed scientific journal.
Another tool essential to the research development in the CEGOT is the candidacy to competitive funding both via national research grants funded by the FCT and to international projects funded by European entities and others. Therefore, for each one of the research themes proposed, the CEGOT will apply to a national research project and integration into an international project.
In addition to fundamental research, will continue to develop applied research, particularly through the contracting of services and strengthening relations with local, regional and national community.
Finally, in order to promote the articulation between research conducted in the CEGOT with research in Geography conducted in Portugal and internationally, the CEGOT will organize, directly or indirectly, international scientific meetings. These could be more extensive (like the recent meeting in Geography and the PPP's), which edition could be repeated every other year or have a more sectorial or thematic character. The following meetings are planned for 2014:
- Luso-Brazilian meeting in Geo-patrimony and |
