Objectives

Anatomia Patológica dedicates to the study of structural and functional alterations of cells, organs and tissues which are the base of diseases.

Anatomia Patológica – Biopatologia I principal goal is to teach a new language.
Pathology language provides the basic words of all medical terms and, by its antiquity and universality in the biomedical sciences, is a valorous instrument for a structured integration of knowledge and discoveries that constantly occur specially at the Molecular Biology field.
Learning this language comprehends memorization of words and understanding their concepts/definitions, although the ability to use this knowledge in the interpretation of new data and problems resolution is also important.
Wishfully the young dentist should be able to recognise biological processes and disease models that will allow him to identify several differential diagnoses and establish prognosis when confronted to a determined clinical situation.

Program

Anatomia Patológica – Biopatologia I program is related to the study plan of Anatomia Patológica – Biopatologia II which is focused in the study of organs and systems (3rd year, 6th semester).

This is the session’s program for 2007-2008:

Teaching methods and learning activities

56 hours of sessions that corresponds to 1 hour of theory session per week; 2 hours of seminar per week and 2 hours practice per each two weeks.

One theory session per week during one hour maximum: 50 minutes of theory followed by 10 minutes of discussion.
One seminar per week during two hours maximum with previous distribution of texts and pictures (trough Crucial Documents CD) to the students, that wishfully should discuss them during the session.

One practice session during two hours each two weeks. The session comprehends the discussion of one or two subjects with previous distribution to the students (trough Crucial Documents CD) of texts and pictures of selected cases: macroscopic pictures of surgical specimens, histology slide pictures, histochemical and immunohistochemical slide pictures and ultrastructural photos. Wishfully, the student should explore previously the distributed documents and be able to discuss them during the session. Students should be distributed in to four groups and be present in separately sessions.

Crucial Documents (CD): Each student will receive a compact disc that contains basic information about Anatomia Patológica – Biopatologia I and includes: a) a glossary, b) introductory texts and documents related to practice sessions, c) documents to guide seminars preparation and d) relevant internet links to pathology sites.

Eligibility for exams

Evaluation comprehends practice exam (4 points out of 20) and theory exam (16 points out of 20).
All the students that were absent in 3 or more practice sessions or seminars will be penalised with – 0.5 points (3 to 5 absences), or -1 point (more than 5 absences). Absences control is made 10 minutes after sessions beginning.

Practice exam: 33 multiple choice questions about image documents showed during sessions or very similar to pictures presented in recommended books.

Theory exam: 100 questions – 50 multiple choice questions and 50 uncued questions that should be answered with glossary words.

There is no penalisation for wrong answers.
There will be no oratory defence.
Practice and theory exam can be reviewed by student’s requisition.
