Summary: Since its foundation, the main objectives of the Centro de Matemática da Universidade do Porto (CMUP) are to carry out and support mathematical research, as well as to promote the dissemination of Mathematics as a fundamental discipline for the development of society at all levels. CMUP has around 70 integrated researchers, mainly from various Faculties of the Universidade do Porto but also from the Instituto Politécnico do Porto. This organization means that CMUP has achieved a critical mass and variety in its composition, which allows for carrying out world class research in a number of areas, and also for benefiting from synergies arising from interactions between its researchers. The present Strategic Project builds on, and updates, the research project evaluated in the last evaluation round carried out by the FCT in 2007/2008. Thus we propose to carry out and organize our research activities within the framework of the existing research groups: - Algebra, Combinatorics and Number Theory - Analysis - Dynamical Systems - Geometry and Topology - History and Didactics of Mathematics - Numerical Analysis, Probability and Statistics - Semigroups, Automata and Languages - Signal Processing and Data Analysis The precise research objectives within each group, and the plan and methods proposed for achieving them, are described in detail in the following sections of the application. Transversally to this organization in groups, we propose to continue the efforts of the CMUP in outreach activities and the promotion of interactions between the academic world and industry.
