Objectives
Acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of microanatomy, based on optical microscopy, and the normal histophysiology of human body organs and systems, as well as their embryology, gaining fundamental skills for the training of the dental surgeon from a holistic perspective of the organism.
Provide knowledge and skills that support the analysis, understanding, and progressive integration of content from other sciences, such as anatomy, cell biology, physiology, immunology, and biopathology.
Learning outcomes and competences
Students will be able to diagnose, in a differentiated manner, the organs of the human body, as well as their structural components, and describe, in an integrated way, the underlying histophysiology.
The student will be able to understand and anticipate the morphofunctional consequences arising from alterations in the microanatomy and histophysiology of the systems studied.
They will be able to understand and describe normal human embryological development, as well as identify and comprehend the most frequent anomalies.
Working method
Presencial
Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
Previous knowledge of Cellular and Molecular Biology, of Anatomy, and of Histology and Embryology I.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Expository methods (lecture‑style plenary sessions and interactive classes) combined with practical training.
The programme includes the analysis and discussion of histological preparations presented as modern digital slides, as well as static projected images and microscope views whenever appropriate.
During practical sessions, interactive discussions are encouraged that integrate theory, practice and morphofunctional aspects, using images, questionnaires and debates.
Additional support is available outside of teaching hours via SIGARRA and other digital platforms, which provide materials for self-study and self-assessment.

Eligibility for exams
According to the General Regulations for Student Assessment at the University of Porto, a student is deemed to meet the attendance requirement for a module if, whilst being duly enrolled, they do not exceed the maximum number of absences, which is set at 25 % of the scheduled lessons, in accordance with the regulations in force within the relevant organisational unit.
Attendance recorded in a previous academic year (from 2020/21 inclusive) is taken into account for the current academic year.
Calculation formula of final grade
Final classification = (Grade of theory test x 0.45) + (Grade of practical test x 0.50) + (Grade of participation x 0.05).
Each partial grade is given on the scale of 0 to 20.
Minimum mark in the theory test: 9.5.
Minimum score on the practice test: 9.5.
Minimum final score: 9.5 (= 10 points).
Condition for admission to the practical test: to get a minimum score of 9.5 in the theoretical examination.
Participation rewards attendance, attitudes, collaboration, commitment and the quality of student performance over time. Theoretical and especially practical classes will be considered for this purpose. Questions will be asked which will serve to assess the final grade for Participation.
Internship work/project
THEORETICAL EXAM - Multiple choice test. Each question has 5 alternatives, of which only one is correct. All the desired items can be chosen - the correct item is worth 100% of the question; each of the wrong ones is worth -25%. The number of questions and duration of each exam is informed at the time. As a general rule, the time will not be less than 50 seconds / question.
PRACTICAL EXAMINATION - Consists of a questionnaire for short answers, made based on static and/or dynamic images (digital slides). Diagnosis of histological structures or related questions is requested. The number of questions is variable. The time of each exam is announced on the occasion. The exam is not divisible and is conducted during both normal and resit terms.
There are no special assignments, and small questionnaires may be implemented, either in person or remotely.
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
The above-mentioned examinations are intended for students sitting exams during the regular periods (normal and resit). As for special examinations, requested for example by student association representatives or corresponding to the special September period, these may take on different formats, defined by the course coordinator on a case-by-case basis. They may therefore consist of exams similar to those described, but with a different number of questions, written theoretical-practical exams, theoretical-practical exams with projection, direct oral assessment using histological slides under the microscope, or other variants. The exact type of examination is communicated at the time of its administration.
The scheduling of examinations is the responsibility of the teaching staff, in accordance with their availability and the occupation of examination rooms. Candidates are informed via a notice on SIGARRA or Moodle and/or by e-mail, sent to the addresses provided by ICBAS and registered in the students’ records.
Classification improvement
It is only possible to improve the grade after final approval of the UC.
It is done by conducting new final tests, theoretical and/or practical. The grade of the participation will be maintained.
It will always be considered the best possible combination between classifications obtained, at the same time or at different times.
It will be up to the student to check if the best combination was used and to draw attention if it was not.
Observations
If the student does not obtain final approval in a given season, the positive partial grades achieved (from 2020/21 onwards) in the various assessment components will, in principle, be carried over to subsequent seasons and/or academic years; the situation to be confirmed by the regent in the first theoretical class of each academic year.
During a specific period of exams, students may choose to take only the theoretical exam. If you approve, you will be able to take the practical test at a later time. Until you pass, you cannot improve the theoretical exam. You can, however, dispense with the pending grade and take a new theoretical exam, being, however, subject to a new classification (whether positive or negative).
Pending classifications obtained from the 2020/2021 school year onwards are considered pending confirmation of their validity.
Repeating students are typically exempt from attending practical classes; they should participate in theoretical classes instead. They will only be able to attend practical courses again if there is a place available in the classroom.
